SM runners compete in Owen Invitational
Smoky Mountain’s men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in the Owen Invitational held last Thursday at Black Mountain Recreation Park.
The Lady Mustangs placed 18th among 20 teams. SM’s Cadence Railsback was 44th out of 180 runners in 22:53. Completing the team’s top five were:
Katie Hayes, 129th, 26:32; Emily Butcher, 161st, 28:08; Caitie Stehling, 163rd, 28:13; and Chelsea Lydeen, 168th, 28:52.
On the men’s side, Anthony Stephens led the way as he was 70th among 231 runners in 19:54. The Mustangs were 18th out of 21 teams. Rounding out SM’s top five were:
Paul Hammer, 114th, 21:08; Trey Franks, 130th, 21:47; John Cody, 159th, 22:39; and Josh Seay, 218th, 27:40.
“The kids really ran well,” Coach Lawson Hopper said. “Quite a few of them dropped their times. They really enjoyed the course, but they were more excited that their times were coming down.”
