Saturday fire damages East Cope Creek home

By Carey Phillips

A fire Saturday night (Sept. 23) damaged a home on Iceberg Lane off of East Cope Creek.

The Sylva Fire Department responded to a 9:20 p.m. call to the Robert Tolley residence. Tolley was in bed when the blaze broke out and escaped after a smoke detector was activated, according to Assistant Fire Chief Brian Wellmon.

The fire is believed to have been electrical in nature and began in the kitchen, Wellmon said. Most of the fire damage was confined to the kitchen area with smoke damage elsewhere, he added.

“Flames were shooting out the back corner of the house near the kitchen,” Wellmon said of the situation when he arrived.

Fire departments from Balsam and Cullowhee provided mutual aid.

Firefighters stayed on the scene around 90 minutes, Wellmon said.
