Coach Brown wins 200th soccer game

Grant Schallock scored four goals and had two assists leading Smoky Mountain to a 12-0 non-conference soccer win at Murphy on Sept. 18.

The victory was the 200th for Dolphus Brown, who is in his 15th season as SM’s coach.

Brown said he has pictures of all 15 teams in his classroom.

“When I’m at my desk and I think about the number of wins, I look at those pictures,” he said. “That’s what I think about. One of the blessings of being able to do this is the relationships with the kids and to share in the victories.”

The Mustangs dominated play with 28 shots to four by SM. Murphy’s Luke Johnson made 14 saves, and Cody Bryson had two for the Mustangs. SM’s Eli Corwin also saw action in goal.

“Even when you blow a team out, you see guys doing good things,” Brown said. “We have a finish-them-off mentality. We don’t play down, and that’s real important to me.”

Schallock scored the game’s first two goals in the opening 10 minutes. He connected at the five-minute mark with an assist by Martin Davis and scored again five minutes later with Joey Cox and Zack Christy providing assists.

Schallock assisted on David Cheatham’s goal making it 3-0 at the 13-minute mark.

The Mustangs added a pair of goals late in the first half for a 5-0 margin at intermission . Cox scored at the 36-minute mark and assisted on Schallock’s goal two minutes later.

SM added to the scoring with two goals in the opening minutes of the second half for a 7-0 advantage. Cheatham scored with two minutes elapsed off Schallock’s assist, and Schallock connected two minutes later with assists by Matt Dougherty and Davis.

Richard Ramirez scored at the 52- and 55-minute marks making it 9-0. Assists were provided by John Brown and Cox.

The last three goals came in the closing 10 minutes. Cort Smith scored with an assist from Ian Youmans at the 70-minute mark. Christy added a goal five minutes later. Brown concluded the scoring off of a Davis assist with two minutes left.
