Woodring is on the run after he shot and killed estranged wife Bonnie Woodring at Sylva’s REACH battered women’s shelter around 9:10 p.m. Sept. 18. He escaped in a blue 2006 Honda Civic that was stolen from a neighbor on Kitchens Branch Road. Authorites believe Wood-ring stole the 12-gauge....


WCU to celebrate mountain heritage - Western Carolina University’s Mountain Heritage Day is guaranteed to be a blast this year – literally – with two exhibitions of black powder musket shooting scheduled among the day’s activities. The 32nd edition of WCU’s annual celebration of traditional mountain culture is set for Saturday, Sept. 30, on the WCU campus. Friday accident claims life of Franklin woman - One person was killed and two others injured in a two-vehicle accident Friday morning (Sept. 22) on U.S. 23-441 near Pumpkintown Road. Belinda Madonia Burdette, 45, of Franklin, died at the scene, according to N.C. Highway Patrol Sgt. Matt Wike. Burdette was traveling north around 7 a.m. when her 1992 Oldsmobile van was struck by a southbound 1999 Nissan Pathfinder that had hydroplaned and crossed into the southbound lanes, Wike said.
