Dillsboro, circa 1894
This week’s “Then and Now” is missing its “now” photo, because mid 20th-century construction of the U.S. 441/23 bridge over Scotts Creek makes it impossible to see the area in the above photograph, which may have been taken from Squire Watkins Inn, today. The photo shows high water in both Scotts Creek (foreground) and the Tuckaseigee River from a catastrophic 1894 flood in Dillsboro. High water rose to the tops of counters in store buildings and almost to the hotel (likely the Jarrett House), according to Minnie Dills Gray’s “History of Dillsboro.” The middle house in the photo is believed to be the original portion of the C.J. Harris home, which was constructed by Dillboro founder William Allen Dills and is now Riverwood Shops. – Photo courtesy of Jean Hartbarger.
