Smoky Mountain soccer team breezes to victory over Devils
Smoky Mountain breezed past Swain 10-0 in a non-conference soccer game on Sept. 13 at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.
Grant Schallock, David Cheatham and Joey Cox all scored two goals for the Mustangs (8-1), who are ranked ninth in the latest state 2-A poll.
With SM having scored a school record 16 goals against the Maroon Devils just over a week earlier, Coach Dolphus Brown called up several members of the JV team. They saw extensive action and some even got into the scoring column.

“That was a blessing to get them a lot of playing time,” Brown said. “We kicked the ball around and dropped it back some to work on some things. Swain has a very young team.”
SM’s dominance can be see by a 30-1 advantage in shots. Cody Bryson made one save for the Mustangs in the first half. Eli Corwin played the second half and did not have to make a save. Swain goalies Kaelob Shook and Nick Lyons combined for 10 saves.
Cheatham scored the game’s first goal from 8 yards out with less than two minutes elapsed.
Rob Tyson made it 2-0 when he scored from 20 yards away at the 4:30 mark.
The next two goals were almost identical as Schallock scored on headers with assists from Joey Cox. They came at the 6:30 and eight-minute marks upping the margin to 4-0.
The duo switched roles at the 9:30 mark when Cox scored from 18 yards out off a Schallock assist to lead 5-0.
JVs scored the next two goals about a minute apart. Keller Berry connected at the 11-minute mark off a Matt Dougherty assist. Rodrigo Nogal tallied a minute later with Richard Ramirez providing the assist for a 7-0 advantage at the 12-minute mark.
That’s how things stayed until Cheatham scored off a Martin Davis assist extending the margin to 8-0 four minutes into the second half.
An own goal at the 61-minute mark put SM up 9-0 as a pass deflected off a Swain player into the goal.
Bryson, getting an opportunity to play in the field, concluded the scoring at the 69:30 mark with an assist from Berry.
A game last Thursday at Owen was cancelled due to a scheduling conflict for the Warhorses. It likely will not be made up.
