Schallock, Cox lead Mustangs to victory

Grant Schallock and Joey Cox both scored two goals and had an assist leading Smoky Mountain to a 5-0 non-conference win over Tallulah Falls (Ga.) on Sept. 11 at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.

“It was a great win,” Coach Dolphus Brown said. “All their players are from Africa and Asia. They had size and were very fast. We adjusted very well. It was a solid team win.”

Matt Dougherty opened the scoring five minutes into the game with an assist from Schallock.

“Grant had the ball on the far left just outside the box,” Brown said. “He made a beautiful cross into the box. Matt was standing totally unmarked about 7 yards out.”

The Mustangs went up 2-0 at the 18-minute mark on Schallock’s goal off a Cox assist.

“Joey made a diagonal pass to the far post,” the coach said. “Grant settled it and scored from 12 yards out.”

Nine minutes into the second half, SM made it 3-0 with Cox scoring off a Dougherty throw-in.

“Matt threw the ball, and it crossed all the way to Joey, who was about 12 yards out at the very far post,” Brown said.

The margin reached 4-0 at the 55-minute mark when Schallock scored his second goal off of Ian Youmans’ assist.

“The ball came out of the midfield from Ian, who made a nice diagonal pass,” the coach said. “Grant received it and fired a shot from 16 yards.”

Cox concluded the scoring a minute later with an assist from Martin Davis.

“Martin made a pass to the right, and Joey shot from the edge of the box into the far post,” Brown said.

The Mustangs had a 14-8 advantage in shots. SM’s Cody Bryson made six saves, and Eli Corwin had one. Abdul Dean and Angelo Rodriquez recorded six and five saves, respectively, for Tallulah Falls.
