James Sherrill
James Rondal Sherrill, 44, of Whittier, died unexpectedly Friday, Sept. 8, 2006, at his home.
Services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, at Whittier Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Revs.Clifford Willis and Randy Ammons officiated. Burial was at Swain Memorial Park.
A native of Jackson County, he was the son of Willie Sherrill of the home and the late James D. Sherrill Jr. He graduated from Sylva-Webster High School in 1980 and attended Mars Hill College and Southwestern Community College.
He served in the Navy from 1980 to 1984 as a communications electrician and also worked at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia. His other employment included Sonitrol Systems in Hawaii, Smoky Mountain Systems and Swain County Schools.
He was also an avid fisherman and golfer.
Surviving in addition to his mother are two daughters, Amy Rae Sherrill of Mountain View, Calif., and Amanda Nicole Sherrill of Waynesville; one son, Jesse Ryan Sherrill of Waynesville; and one sister, Cinda Sherrill of Whittier.

Arthur Munson, Jr.
Arthur R. Munson, Jr., 76, of St. Augustine, Fla., and Sylva, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2006.
Services have been scheduled in St. Augustine Tuesday, Sept. 19, at Anastasia Baptist Church, and in Canandaigua, N.Y. Wednesday, Sept. 27, at First Congregational Church, of which he was a member.
A native of Canandaigua, he was the son of the late Arthur R. Munson, Sr. and Charlotte Bacon. He was also a member of Ancient City Baptist Church in St. Augustine.
He was employed as executive director of the American Cancer Society in Winston-Salem; as transportation director at Sarah Coventry in Newark, N.Y.; and by the Kidney Foundation in Jacksonville, Fla. After retirement, he was employed at St. Augustine Sightseeing Trains.
He was also a member of the Ontario County Historical Society in Canandaigua and the Munson Foundation.
Surviving are his wife of 13 years, Elsie Munson; one daughter, Lynn Wettach of St. Augustine; one son, Mark P. Munson of Canandaigua; one brother, John B. Munson of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; and five grandchildren.

Clyde Norman
Clyde Jarvis Norman, 86, of Bunny Cove Road, Sylva, died unexpectedly Friday, Sept. 15, 2006, at the VA Medical Center in Asheville after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, with the Rev. Earl Holden officiating. Burial was in Norman Blanton Cemetery with military rites conducted by the William E. Dillard American Legion Post 104, of which he was a member.
Pallbearers were Donnie Parris, Lawrence Davis, Andy Mathis, Mike Cogdill, Harold Henry, Donnie Gass and Roger Norman.
He was a son of the late Samuel and Mel Mills Norman. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a decorated veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II and had served in Normandy, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was an avid gardener and outdoorsman, and was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Parris Norman, who died in 1998; two daughters, Joyce Anderson and Carolyn Lathan; two sisters, Virgie Queen and Ruby Norman; and three brothers, Robert, Allen and Ray Norman.
Surviving are two daughters, Sandy Norman and Clydie Buchanan of Sylva; one sister, Mary Hilda Norman of Sylva; one brother, Lloyd Norman of Brevard; one granddaughter and two great-grandchildren.

Ocoee Simpson
Ocoee S. Simpson, 86, of Whittier, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital.
Services were held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, in the Mausoleum Chapel at Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park, with the Rev. Timothy Raul officiating.
She was a longtime resident of Key Biscayne, Fla., before moving permanently to Whittier in 1993. She volunteered at the Mercy Hospital in Miami for several years. She was an active artist, a member of the Key Biscayne Birthday Club and a member of the Mountain Skill Crafts Club in Bryson City.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Carl W. Simpson, who died in 1971; one son, Gregory Lane Simpson; and one brother, Rowell Sigmon.
Surviving are three daughters, Carlotta O. Simpson, Janet S. Hart and Pamela S. Clark, all of Whittier; two sisters, Charlotte Jo Carpenter of Maiden and Angela S. Smith of Linville; and one grandchild.

Wendell Ray
Wendell Ray, 75, of Cullowhee, died unexpectedly Monday, Sept. 18, 2006, at his residence.
Services were scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, with the Revs. Clifford Parker and David Sourderes officiating.
Burial was to be in Old Savannah Baptist Church Cemetery with military rites conducted by William E. Dillard American Legion Post 104, of which he was a member. Deacons of Old Savannah Baptist Church were to be pallbearers.
A native of Cullman, Ala., he had lived in Jackson County most of his life and was a son of the late Christopher and Lonnie Oden Ray. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran having served in Korea. He owned and operated Ray’s Fabrics in Sylva for 40 years. He was an avid gardener and had served as Sunday school superintendent, deacon and choir member at Old Savannah Baptist Church, of which he was a member.
He is preceded in death by one sister and three brothers.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Gladys Brooks Ray; one daughter, Wendy Cagle of Sylva; three sons, Chris Ray of Cullowhee, and Mark Ray and Mitch Ray of Sylva; one sister, Jean Smith of Burlington, Ala.; one brother, Myron Ray of Burlington, Ala.; and three grandchildren.
Dick Johnson
Dick Mallard Johnson, 75, of North Cedar Drive, Surfside Beach, S.C., died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2006, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel, with burial following at Hillcrest Cemetery.
He was born Dec. 30, 1930, in Socastee, S.C., to the late Ed Johnson and Della Thompson.
He was a U.S. Army veteran stationed in Fort Lewis, Wash. He worked for Standard Oil Co. in Washington, D.C. and owned several businesses there and in the Myrtle Beach, S.C., area before opening a Christian bookstore in Surfside Beach. He was elected to two terms on the Surfside Beach Town Council and was elected mayor in 1986. He Johnson was a member of First Baptist Church of Surfside Beach and an active deacon for 22 years. He helped organize the South Strand Kiwanis Club and the South Strand Helping Hands.
Surviving are his wife, Anna Johnson; one daughter, Deborah Watson of Myrtle Beach; one son, Michael Johnson; five grandchildren, including Chris Watson of Sylva; and three great-grandchildren.

Kenneth Norton
Kenneth L. Norton, 78, of Conleys Creek Road, Whittier, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2006, at his residence after a period of declining health.
Services are scheduled for 7 p.m. today (Thursday, Sept. 21) at Whittier Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Clifford Willis officiating.
The family was scheduled to receive friends at the church from 6 to 7 p.m. prior to the service.
Burial will be at Norton Cemetery in Cashiers. Pallbearers will be Kemmer Norton, Danny Norton, Steven Norton, Larry Ashe, Rob Drury, Scott Bowers and Edgar Kirkland. Honorary pallbearers will be Phillip Norton and C.W. Ogle.
He was born in Glenville in the Hamburg township to the late Leonard and Bertha Dillard Norton. He had lived in Swain County since 1957.
He was a professional truck driver from 1956 until 1998, employed by Cope Trucking Company, Fredrickson Motor Express and Tuckasegee Mills.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl and Leslie Norton; and two sisters, Juanita Connor and Edith Henson.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Helen Kilpatrick Norton; two daughters, Glenda Hoak and Marilyn Norton, both of Whittier; one sister, Mary Hoyle of Sylva; one brother, Kemmer Norton of Canton; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Jake Laney
Jake Laney, 84, of Cherokee, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at Big Cove Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bo Parris officiating. Burial will be at Thompson Family Cemetery, Cherokee.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 11 p.m. today (Thursday, Sept. 21) at the church.
A son of the late Floyd and Gertie Hartness Laney, he retired after working 40 years with the State Prison System in New Jersey as a dairy farmer. He was a member of the Lions Club.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Allene Thompson Laney; and three brothers, James Floyd Laney, Leon Jack Laney and Johnny L. Laney.
Surviving are one brother, Taft Laney of Brasstown; and five sisters, Georgia Tweed of Lakeside, Ore., Dorothy L. Davis of Macon, Ga., Lois Williamson of Warren, Julie Althea Kelley of Murphy and Margaret Tweed of Andrews.
