Lady Mustangs down N. Buncombe in five
Smoky Mountain outlasted North Buncombe 25-23, 22-25, 26-24, 22-25, 15-13 in a non-conference volleyball match Sept. 11 at the SM gym.
“We had ups and downs throughout the match,” Coach Ken Walker said. “We’re not closing games out when things start going our way. We’re letting the other team dictate the way we play. We’re not playing the way we want to play.”
Sarah Haggard handed out 36 assists, and Amy Haggard put down 22 kills.
The Lady Mustangs took a 13-11 edge in the fifth game after Kelli Woodard served three points and Amy Haggard had a kill. Sarah Haggard served the clinching point.
SM fell behind early in game one but cut the gap to 11-10 on three points by Megan Taylor and Amy Haggard’s kill. Five service points from Kelly Childress put the Lady Mustangs up for good 24-22, and they won it on a side out.
Taylor’s three points, including an ace, and Woodard’s kill gave SM an 11-6 lead in the second game. An 11-1 spurt by the Lady Hawks put them in front 23-18. Taylor served three points, and Amy Haggard had three consecutive kills narrowing the deficit to 24-22, but North held on for the win.
SM appeared ready to fall behind two games to one in game three after trailing 24-18. However, Sarah Haggard served seven straight points, including three aces, and Brittany Gilbert had a kill giving the Lady Mustangs the win.
Gilbert’s three points, including an ace, along with kills by Woodard and Sarah Haggard cut North’s early lead to 10-9 in the fourth game. The Lady Mustangs moved in front at 16-15 when Amy Haggard served three points and Taylor and Gilbert had kills. The Lady Hawks scored the last five points of the game to even the match.
Taylor led in service points with 12. Amy Haggard and Childress followed with 11 apiece, and Sarah Haggard had 10. Amy Haggard served 90 percent.
Team serving was 82.3 percent.
The Lady Mustang JVs won 25-8, 25-15.
“We played well,” Coach Natasha Wilson said. “I’m looking for us to play consistently like we did in this match.
The team displayed overall good net play, said Wilson, who singled out Brittany Wood-ard for her serving.
