Franklin rallies for five-game victory over Smoky Mountain

Franklin came back from a two games to none deficit to defeat Smoky Mountain 15-25, 19-25, 25-4, 25-18, 15-11 in a non-conference volleyball match Sept. 12 at Franklin.

Coach Ken Walker said he had never been involved in a match where a team so dominated the first two games then lost so bad in game three.

“In the first two games, we didn’t allow their crowd to get into it,” Walker said. “When the crowd got going, their team became more aggressive.”

Sarah Haggard finished with 22 assists, and Amy Haggard had 15 kills.

Six points, including three aces, by Sarah Haggard, along with Amy Haggard’s kill, gave the Lady Mustangs a 7-1 lead in game one. They were up 19-10 after Kelli Woodard served four points and Kelly Childress and Sarah Haggard provided kills. Sarah Haggard’s three points and two kills by Amy Haggard made it 23-12. The game ended on Amy Haggard’s kill for a side out.

Woodard served the first four points of the second game, and Childress had a kill. Amy Haggard’s five points, including an ace, plus kills by Childress and Brittany Gilbert put SM up 11-6. The margin reached 16-7 when Gilbert served three points, including two aces, and Woodard had a kill. Childress’ kill for a side out clinched the game.

The third game was over almost before it started. SM scored the first point, but the Lady Panthers reeled off 11 in a row and didn’t look back.

Franklin maintained the lead throughout game four until Childress had four points and Woodard put down consecutive kills for a 17-16 Lady Mustang edge. Franklin finished the game on a 9-1 run.

The fifth game was close until the Lady Panthers opened an 11-7 lead and stayed on top the rest of the way.

Sarah Haggard led in service points with 12. Amy Haggard and Woodard added 10 apiece. Amy Haggard and Megan Taylor were perfect in 19 and six serves, respectively.

Team serving was 86.7 percent.

Franklin won the JV match 25-14, 25-16.

“We played well, but we had some mental breakdowns,” Coach Natasha Wilson said. “We’ve got to get past starting off slow. We’ve got to start off wanting to win.”
