Then and now
More than 3,000 people crowded into downtown Sylva for what was the biggest occasion in Jackson County’s then 64-year history – the unveiling and dedication of a monument to honor Jackson County soldiers who fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War. That gathering (top photo) was 91 years ago next week, on Sept. 18, 1915. The county’s remaining Civil War veterans are grouped at the base of the statue, which was placed on the Courthouse steps a half-century after the Civil War ended. Some 60 years later, in the mid-1990s, the statue was removed, refurbished and rededicated. – Herald file photo (top) and Herald photo by Nick Breedlove.
