Swain rolls to victory over Lady Mustangs
Swain rolled past Smoky Mountain 25-20, 25-15, 25-22 in a non-conference volleyball match Saturday at Bryson City.
“It was a step back,” Coach Ken Walker said. “We take two steps forward and one step back. We fell behind in the first two games, and it’s hard to get out of that hole. We didn’t cover the blocks well.”
Swain took an 18-7 lead in the first game before the Lady Mustangs (4-2) made their best run of the match. Kelli Woodard reeled off nine straight points, including two aces, while Amy Haggard had two kills and Sarah Haggard added one, cutting the gap to 18-17. The Lady Devils closed the game out with an 8-3 spurt.
The second game was tied 8-8 on Megan Taylor’s service point before Swain opened an 18-10 lead and never looked back.
The Lady Devils scored six straight points to take an 11-5 advantage in game three. SM made a late run to narrow the deficit to 23-22 on four points, including an ace, by Amy Haggard.
Amy Haggard recorded 11 kills, and Sarah Haggard had 15 assists.
Woodard was tops in service points with 11. She served 93.8 percent as did Amy Haggard. Team serving was 84.5 percent.
The Lady Mustang JVs fell to 2-4 with a 25-8, 25-12 loss.
“We had no chemistry,” Coach Natasha Wilson said. “We just had a really off game. We’re not playing in a game situation like we’re playing in practice.”
