Smoky Mountain tops Lady Bulldog spikers
Smoky Mountain survived a close third game to claim a 25-18, 25-13, 26-24 non-conference volleyball win on Sept. 6 at Murphy.
“Everybody contributed to the win,” Coach Ken Walker said. “It was nice to get a win in three games.”
Amy Haggard led the way with 10 kills followed by Kelli Woodard with nine and Brittany Gilbert with seven. Walker said they all hit well along with Kelly Childress and Megan Taylor.
Sarah Haggard set the hitters up with 24 assists.

The Lady Mustangs opened a 14-9 advantage in the first game, but Murphy rallied for a 15-15 tie. SM took the lead for good at 16-15 on Gilbert’s kill for a side out. Woodard served the last two points with Amy Haggard and Childress providing the kills.
Amy Haggard’s three points and Gilbert’s kill gave SM a 5-3 edge in game two. Gilbert reeled off nine straight points, including three aces, and Sarah Haggard had a kill upping the margin to 18-7. The game ended on a Lady Bulldog service error.
The Lady Mustangs took a 4-2 lead in the third game after Sarah Haggard served three points and Gilbert and Childress had kills. SM was up 17-10 before Murphy rallied to draw even at 24-24. Amy Haggard served an ace for the clinching point.
Gilbert led in service points with 12. Taylor and Amy Haggard both served 90.9 percent. Team serving was 84 percent.
Walker cited Brittany Haskett for her serving and Hannah Painter for her back row play.
The Lady Mustang JVs won 25-16, 19-25. 25-21.
“They played a good game,” said Edith Callahan, who coached the match in place of Natasha Wilson. “We had some ups and downs, but each time we were able to come back and pull it together.”
