The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Pauline Rice

Dr. Pauline Crisp Rice, 78, of Cullowhee, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2006, at a Sylva nursing home.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, at Cullowhee Baptist Church with the Revs. Jeffery and Tonya Vickery officiating. Burial was in Bill Moody Memorial Park, Bryson City.

She was a daughter of the late Sherman Crisp and Janie Rider Crisp and was born in Swain County.

She was a life member and past president of the North Carolina Business Educators’ Association and active in the Business and Professional Women’s Club.

She began teaching at the age of 19 at Lowell Elementary School and taught in Gaston County, Graham County and Swain County. She joined the faculty of the Business Department at Western Carolina University 17 years ago. She held a bachelors’ degree from Queens University, a master’s degree from WCU and a doctorate from the University of Tennessee.

She was a deacon at Cullowhee Baptist Church, where she taught the adult Sunday school class.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Nina McCurry, and three brothers, French, Everette, and Clifford Crisp.

Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Dr. Jerry Rice, Jr.; one son, Jerry Rice, III; two sisters, Nellie Wiggins and Betty Lou Jenkins, both of Bryson City; and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.

Moody Funeral Home of Sylva was in charge of arrangements.



James Sherrill

James Rondal Sherrill, 44, of Whittier, died unexpectedly Friday, Sept. 8, 2006, at his home.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, at the Whittier Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Revs. Clifford Willis and Randy Ammons officiated. Burial was in Swain Memorial Park in Bryson City.

He was the son of Willie Sherrill of the home and the late James D. Sherrill, Jr.

He graduated from Sylva-Webster High School in 1980 and attended Mars Hill College and Southwestern Community College. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1980 to 1984 as a communications electrician and also worked at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia. He also worked at Sonitrol Systems in Hawaii, at Smoky Mountain Systems, and was most recently employed part-time with Swain County Schools. He was also an avid fisherman and golfer.

Surviving in addition to his mother are two daughters, Amy Rae Sherrill of Mountain View, Calif., and Amanda Nicole Sherrill of Waynesville; one son, Jesse Ryan Sherrill of Waynesville; and one sister, Cinda Sherrill of Whittier.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Edith Ott

Edith Susan Ott, 54, of Grove Road, Webster, died unexpectedly Thursday, Sept. 7, 2006, at her residence.

No services have been planned at this time.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.



Becky Symons

Becky Symons, 61, of Eufaula, Ala., died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006, at Lakeview Community Hospital in Eufaula.

Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8, in the chapel of Chapman Funeral Home, with the Rev. Billy Bevins officiating.

She was born Sept. 26, 1944 in Sylva, to the late James and Vivian Jean Daves Parker. She was an LPN for 25 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 29 years, Ray Symons.

Surviving are one son, Jimmy Symons of Eufaula; three daughters, Angela Allen of Eufaula, Sandy Reed of Webb, Ala., and Sharon Connell of Banks, Ala.; one step-daughter, Karen Mock of Mt. Vernon, Ga.; two sisters, Jimmie Bryson of Cullowhee and Mary Lou Pressley of Brevard; and nine grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Wiregrass Hospice.



Ocoee Simpson

Ocoee S. Simpson, 86, of Whitier, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2006.

Services were scheduled to be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13 in the Mausoleum Chapel of Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park.

The family was scheduled to receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. before the service.

Garrett Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.



Ruby Tolbert

Ruby Lee Blanton Tolbert, 92, of Whittier, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at Hyatt’s Chapel Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Revs. Mike Moore and Steve Webb officiated.

Burial followed at Thomas Cemetery. Pallbearers were Justin Baxley, Jason Tolbert, Glenn Thiltgen, Adam Sluss, Ricky Tolbert, Tony Sluss, and Randy Baxley.

Born Sept. 25, 1913, she was a daughter of the late Jess James Blanton and Ella Mae Bradley. She was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County and a homemaker.

She is preceded in death by one son, David Wilson Tolbert, and two brothers, Hubert Blanton and Edward Maurice Blanton.

Surviving are her husband of 74 years, Edward Estes Tolbert; two sons, Glenn Edward Tolbert of Whittier and Charles Ray Tolbert of Panama City, Fla.; one sister, Lucille Blanton Gunter of Anchorage, Alaska; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Furman Raby

Furman L. Raby, 77, of Hillcrest Street, Sylva, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006, at East Sylva Baptist Church. The Revs. Tommy James, Charles Stevens and Charles Dean officiated.

Burial was at Fairview Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Benny Dillard, Bobby Brooks, Johnny Dowdle, Ronnie Beale, David Bennett, and Mike Revis. Honorary pallbearers included the deacons of the church and members of the Ruth Sunday school class.

A son of the late Albert L. and Kansas Tallent Raby, he was a native of Macon County. He had lived in Jackson County for the past 51 years. He retired from Lewis Oil with 30 years of service. He was a member and deacon of East Sylva Baptist Church, where he was involved with the choir, building committee, Sunday school, and the plans for the new church building.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary, Alma and Ruth Raby, and four brothers, Everette, Claude, Lyle and Earl Raby.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Fern Dillard Raby; one daughter, Kathryn Buchanan of Sylva; one son, James A. Raby of Anniston, Ala.; one sister, Louise Raby of Greenville, S.C.; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to East Sylva Baptist Church, 61 Faith Ave., Sylva, NC 28779.

Buddy Lefler

Buddy Allen Lefler, 75, of Reservoir Street, Dillsboro, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Reed officiating. Burial followed in Wilmot Community Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Wesley Stephens, Tony Belt, Ray Sutton, Tommy Bumgarner, Brian Nations and Michael Bumgarner.

He was a son of the late Jess Lefler and Viola Bradley O’Brien. He was born in Jackson County and after leaving for work returned to the county to retire in 1984. He retired from Daniels Construction with over 20 years of service.

He was preceded in death by one brother, James Honeycutt.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Jean Nations Lefler; three daughters, Janice Reed of Franklin, Diane Biddington of Philadelphia, and Dr. Lisa Lefler of Sylva; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, Ohio, 44720.



Willie Sellers

William “Willie” Robert Sellers, 89, of Monteith Branch Road, Sylva, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at Scotts Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Rich Peoples officiating. Graveside services were performed by the Rev. Mark Flores of the American Legion.

The last surviving child of the late Coley and Minnie Sellers, he was born in Dillsboro on Sept. 27, 1916.

He was a veteran of World War II, where he served with the 36th Infantry Division in italy, France and Germany. He received two Purple Hearts and an Oak Cluster for injuries received in combat. He was presented the Bronze Star for valor by Rep. Charles Taylor in 1997. He had retired from Mead after 25 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 104. He was a member of Scotts Creek Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and church custodian for several years.

He was preceded in death by six brothers, Roy, Harley, Homer, Joe, Verlon and Albert Sellers; and two sisters, Lucy Bell Gass and Rosa Mae Jones.

Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Fannie Julie Moore Sellers; two sons, Gary Sellers of Candler and Neal Sellers of Sylva; one daughter Joy Nell Bates of Flowery Branch, Ga.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Scotts Creek Baptist Church, 97 Steeple Rd., Sylva, NC 28779.



Ervin Sluder

Ervin R. Sluder, 96, of Ranzy Crawford Road, Sylva, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006, at Skyland Care Center after a brief illness.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, at the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, with the Rev. Earl Holden officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers included grandsons and grandsons-in-law.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was the son of the late Jeneral and Allie Sluder. He was a retired furniture refinisher from Unagusta after more than 30 years of service. He remained an avid woodworker throughout his life.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Louretta Ensley Sluder; two daughters, Peggy Bryson of Sylva and Audrey Jones of Pinehurst; two sons, Tommy Sluder of Sylva and John Sluder of Washington, Ga.; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.



Salola Porter

Salola Robinson Porter, 53, of Sylva died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006 at Mission Hospitals in Asheville after a period of declining health.

Private services will be held at a later date.

A native of Jackson County where she had lived most of her life, she was the daughter of Alma Owen Robinson of Sylva and the late Troy Robinson.

Surviving in addition to her mother is one brother. Jim Robinson.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home of Sylva is in charge of the arrangements.
