Smoky Mountain’s David Cheatham boots the ball down field in last Thursday’s 16-0 win at Swain which set a school record for goals scored.

“It wasn’t our intention to run the score up,” Coach Dolphus Brown said. “I was pleased we got to play a lot of people and got to play some defenders on the attack.”

The margin was 5-0 at intermission before things really got out of control in the second half. At one point, seven goals were scored in a span of 11 minutes.

“The stars must have been lined up,” Brown said. “We were doing everything we could to keep the score from unnecessarily being run up, but at the same time we had kids scoring goals who had never scored before.”

Cox started the scoring 10 minutes into the game with an assist by Zack Christy. Cox provided the assist on Schallock’s goal making it 2-0 eight minute later.

The lead was 3-0 after Rob Tyson knocked the ball in from 18 yards out midway through the first half.

SM was up 5-0 at halftime following a goal by Cox with an assist from Schallock in the 21st minute and a Ramirez goal off a Cox assist with 10 minutes remaining.

The margin reached 6-0 on a goal by Martin Davis four minutes into the second half.

It was 7-0 when Schallock scored 10 minutes later.

The 11-minute barrage began when Cox scored at the 57-minute mark. Other goals in the sequence, which resulted in a 14-0 lead, included:

John Brown from Ramirez, 59:00; Ramirez, 61:00; Cort Smith from Ramirez, 64:00; Schallock on a direct kick, 66:00; David Cheatham, 67:00; and Christy from Cody Bryson, 68:00.

Christoph Henrichs scored off an Ian Youmans assist at the 76-minute mark, and Ramirez had the final goal off an assist by Matt Dougherty in the closing seconds.

SM pounded out 28 shots while the Maroon Devils only took one. Swain’s Kaelob Shook and Nick Lyons had seven and four saves, respectively.

Bryson placed the first half in goal for the Mustangs, and Eli Corwin played the second half. Neither had to make a save.
