Megan Smith steps down as softball coach

Megan Smith, who coached Western Carolina to the Southern Conference regular season softball championship in the program’s only season, has resigned, according to Athletic Director Chip Smith.

She has accepted a position as assistant coach at LSU.

“Megan and her staff have done an impressive job in building a championship team and a solid foundation for our softball program,” Smith said. “We have already had several inquiries about the position and will name a new coach as quickly as possible.”

In its inaugural season, Western compiled a 41-20 record, including a 16-4 mark in the Southern Conference. Smith was named the league coach of the year.
