Cullowhee firefighters stand at attention Monday (Sept. 11) as Woodmen of the World representatives dedicate a flag in memory of the victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks and of the emergency personnel who also died on that tragic day. Harold Ensley is raising the flag as, from left, Wanda and Charles Buchanan and Bill Moore look on. Woodmen also placed a monument (above) “in honor and remembrance of the heroes and victims of Sept. 11, 2001, and to celebrate the enduring spirit of all Americans.” Speakers at the event included N.C. Sen. John Snow, Jackson County Sheriff Jimmy Ashe and congressional aide Rebecca Heppel, who read a letter from U.S. Congressman Charles Taylor. – Herald photos by Nick Breedlove

Cody Grasty, a Haywood County resident who is president of the Student Government Association at Western Carolina University, leads students, faculty and staff in a moment of silence Monday (Sept. 11). The ceremony, held on the lawn of Hinds University Center, marked the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
