Cats will return to action on Saturday
After a layoff of almost two and a half weeks, Western Carolina’s football team will return to action Saturday with a 6 p.m. game against Eastern Kentucky.
The Colonels are ranked 19th in a pair of Division I-AA polls after last week’s 26-21 win over Western Kentucky. They started the year with a 31-0 lost to Division I-A Cincinnati.
“We’re excited about playing football again,” Coach Kent Briggs said. “We’ve had 17 days between the two games. That’s almost like going through the preseason again.”
Western (1-0) has not played since a 42-0 rout of Division II Chowan on Aug. 31.
“They’re a very experienced football teams with a lot of seniors,” Briggs said of EKU. “It’s a great challenge for us but it’s also a great opportunity to play a program like that with two national championships.”
Linebacker Brandon Rosser was named defensive player of the week in the Ohio Valley Conference after his 10 tackles against Western Kentucky. Josh Greco passed for 107 yards, and Bobby Washington ran for 103 in that contest.
Defensive lineman Felipe Foster, who missed the Chowan game with a knee injury, is expected to see action for the Catamounts. However, quarterback Justin Clark continues to be sidelined with a shoulder injury.
“We have gotten a little healthier,” Briggs said. “Felipe will play. He won’t play a full game, but whatever number of plays he’s in, he will make us better on defense. The rest of the guys we had that didn’t play very much (against Chowan) should be back and give us better depth.”
EKU has won the only two meetings between the schools. Those games were played in 1988 and 1989.
