Bridge honoring Jake Parris to be dedicated this Sunday

The Jake Parris Jr. Memorial Bridge dedication will be held Sunday, Sept. 17, at 4 p.m.

County commissioners will hold the ceremony at the bridge in the Willets community.

It was announced July 17 that the U.S. 23-74 bridge that crosses Dark Ridge Road would be named for Parris, the first chief of the Balsam-Willets-Ochre Hill Fire Department.

Parris, who donated the land for the department’s first fire station, died as a result of a heart attack he suffered while on a high-elevation first responder call in May 1993. Though he was taken from the scene alive, he never recovered and died nine months later.

After his heart attack, Parris was disabled and was not able to return to work.
