WCU professor to be Fairview administrator

By Justin Goble

Students at Fairview Elementary School will soon see a new face in the administrative pod.

Board of Education members Aug. 28 approved Western Carolina University education professor Kathryn Kantz to serve as one of the school’s assistant principals. The action came during the board’s regular monthly meeting.

According to finance officer David Steinbicker, Kantz’s is an 11-month position. Her yearly salary will be $54,527, which includes $49, 570 from state funds and $4,951 from local funds, Steinbicker said.

A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Kantz received both bachelor’s and master’s degree in science education there. She earned her principal’s certification from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Working at Fairview is something Kantz said she is looking forward to.

“I’ve served as a principal and assistant principal before, and those have been the most rewarding experiences I’ve had,” Kantz said. “I’m looking forward to getting back into public schools.”

Before last Monday’s approval, there had only been one assistant principal at Fairview. Principal Dennis Proffitt said the new position came open after some restructuring at the school, which started when former curriculum coordinator Sylvia Yates transferred to Scotts Creek Elementary to become a guidance counselor.

“What we did was move Assistant Principal Caroline Pannell over to handle curriculum,” Profitt said. “Kantz will take Pannell’s old position, which mainly deals with discipline.”

Currently, Kantz is teaching at WCU, and she will continue in the position until it is filled.

“She’s in transition,” Profitt said. “She has to keep teaching at WCU until they fill her position, but they’ve been working with us. Right now, she comes as she can, but when Western hires someone she will be here full-time.”

Kantz said she hopes to begin full-time work at Fairview on Monday, Sept. 11.
