BETTY JONES OF SYLVA is this week’s winner in our “Have Dinner on Us” contest that’s part of our Great Smokies dining guide. Jones won a $25 gift certificate to Bojangle’s. See our restaurant listings on pages 4 and 5C for information on entering the contest.


THANKS TO THE EFFORT and support of many members of the community, ARF (Humane Society of Jackson County) now has a new adoption and spay/neuter trip location. Effective this Saturday, Sept. 9, at 1 p.m. ARF’s pet adoption effort will be located on Railroad Avenue next to LifeWay Church.


REMINISCE ANTIQUES & AUCTION will celebrate its second anniversary Saturday, Sept. 9, with a 6 p.m. auction along with free coffee, cake and giveaways. Owners JoAnn and Ron Raccioppi said they’d like to thank the community, Chamber of Commerce, Sylva Herald advertising and their customers for making this another successful year in business. DOGWOOD CRAFTERS will host a free in-store demonstration Tuesday, Sept. 12, from 9:30 until 11:30 a.m. Pat Purdy will show how to make a traditional sock monkey. Purdy, who has been making the toys for the past 14 years will share the history of their development. For more information, call the store at 586-2248.


FAIRVIEW SCHOOL provides an opportunity for community members to come in and read to children in grades K-2. Each volunteer spends 15-30 minutes once a week reading to a child in one of the double rocking chairs located in the school’s administrative area. Those interested may call Linda Minor at 586-2819.


BALSAM MOUNTAIN INN will host a singer/songwriter session this Saturday, Sept. 9. Inn favorites Casey Kelly, Todd Cerney and Leslie Ellis will perform and share insights into songs they’ve written. Kelly has written for many of Nashville’s major acts and has been described by a critic as “possibly the best songwriter in Nashville.” Cerney is a versatile musician who has penned songs for artists from Lynyrd Skynyrd to John Anderson. Ellis won a Grammy for her vocals on Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” and is featured on the Thomas Dolby album, “Forty.” She founded Working Jane Music and released her first solo album in 1996. The event will be in the inn’s 100-seat restaurant and is accompanied by a gourmet dinner buffet. The evening begins at 7:30 p.m. Cover charge is $10 per person, plus cost of dinner (about $24-$27). NEW BEGINNINGS Counseling Center will offer a new group for family members of those with substance abuse problems. Sessions will be from 6 to 8 p.m. each Friday night. Call New Beginnings at 586-3540 for cost information.


HIGH HAMPTON INN will host a three-day wildflower workshop Sunday, Sept. 24, through Tuesday, Sept. 26. Under the direction of the N.C. Botanical Garden, the event will include walks, field trips, lectures and demonstrations. Cost, which includes accommodations, all meals, all programs, and free tennis and golf greens fees, is $318 per person double occupancy and $350 per person for single occupancy. JOY WHITNEY of Webster will exhibit her work at the Pine Log Arts and Crafts Fair on Saturday, Sept. 9, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, Sept. 10, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event will be held at the Pine Log UMC Campground in Rydal, Ga.


IN LAST WEEK’S article “Local volunteers install cabinets in houses ravaged by Katrina,” the cabinet shop owned by the Rev. Eddie Stillwell was incorrectly identified as Speedy’s Cabinets. The actual name of the shop is Eddie’s Cabinets. The Herald regrets the error.
