Schallock, Cox propel Mustangs to easy win

Grant Schallock scored four goals, and Joey Cox added three leading Smoky Mountain to a 13-1 rout of Murphy in a non-conference soccer game Aug. 29 at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.

John Brown contributed three assists for the Mustangs.

“We figured they were a little better than that,” Coach Dolphus Brown said. “When the wheels started to fall off, it snowballed on them. Our guys played hard. We weren’t trying to run the score up. We were moving people around.”

He noted two defenders scored goals. SM has just four players on the bench.

The Bulldogs, a team with no seniors, struck first when Matthew VanHorn scored with three minutes elapsed.

“We gave up an early goal, but we quickly recovered and didn’t let up,” Brown said.

David Cheatham tied the score with an assist from Schallock at the 11-minute mark.

The Mustangs scored six times in a span of about 12 minutes to turn the game into a rout.

The barrage started when Cox connected off an assist from Brown at the 19-minute mark.

Schallock scored the next two goals at the 22- and 24-minute marks for a 4-1 margin. Brown and Martin Davis provided the assists.

SM was on top 7-1 at intermission. The remaining goals of the first half were scored by Cox with an assist from Brown (26:00), Cheatham with an assist from Cox (28:00) and Ian Youmans with an assist from Matt Dougherty (31:00).

The onslaught continued with three goals in the first eight minutes of the second half for a 10-1 lead. Schallock scored off Dougherty’s assist at the 43-minute mark and had an unassisted goal a minute later. Davis added an unassisted goal at the 48-minute mark.

The Mustangs were in front 12-1 after unassisted goals by Cort Smith (59:00) and Richard Ramirez (67:00).

Cox concluded the scoring off an assist by Youmans with a minute remaining.

SM pounded 39 shots while holding the Bulldogs to five. Cody Bryson made two saves for the Mustangs, and Eli Corwin had one. Murphy’s Kyle Spiva came up with 21 saves.
