When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

Charles Stripling

Charles Mitchell “C.M.” Stripling, Jr., 86, of West Camilla, Ga., died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2006, at his home.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 1, at Camilla United Methodist Church. The Revs. Richard Trawick, Robert Baggs and Carl Stewart officiated.

He was born Jan. 18, 1920, in Camilla to the late Charlie and Marion Fry Stripling. A lifelong resident of Mitchell County, he was for many years a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Camilla, where he served as deacon and elder. For a number of years, he attended the Camilla United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school.

He was active in agricultural causes, serving on the Flint River Soil and Water Conservation Board and as a member of the Mitchell County Farm Bureau. In 1987, he was named National Tree Farmer of the year for his work with the harvesting and care of trees. Community involvement included work in preservation of local landmarks, such as the Sunset Historical Cemetery of Camilla, and the establishment of nature parks, trails and irrigation parks, including the Bernice Campbell Stripling Nature Trail and the University of Georgia’s C.M. Stripling Irrigation Research Park. He provided scholarships for high school students and forestry scholarships for University of Georgia students and was a supporter of the Georgia Sheriff Boys Ranch.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Bernice Campbell Stripling; one daughter, Kathryn Stripling Byer of Cullowhee; one son, Charles Stripling of Camilla; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Albany Community Hospice, 2332 Lake Park Dr., Albany, Ga. 31707.

Louise Snapp

Graveside services for Louise B. Snapp of Leesburg, Fla., who died on Oct. 15, 2004, will be held at 10 a.m. today (Thursday, Sept.7) at Fairview Memorial Gardens.

Father Michael Hutson of St. David’s Episcopal Church will officiate.

Moody Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.



Ervin Sluder

Ervin Sluder of Sylva died Tuesday, Sept. 5, at Skyland Cars Center.

Marenna Locklear

Marenna Wachacha Locklear, 50, of Cherokee’s Big Cove community, died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006, at Mission Hospitals, Memorial Campus in Asheville.

Services were scheduled to be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Hill Baptist Church, with the Revs. James “Bo” Parris and Noah Crowe officiating. Burial will be in the Locklear Family Cemetery.

A native of Graham County, where she was raised, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Dinah Teesateskie Wachacha and was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church in Snowbird.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Conrad Reno Wachacha; and one sister, Lawanda Wachacha Shurtleff.

Surviving are two daughters, Dolly Castillo of Waynesville and Wilma Amos of Cherokee; one son, Josh Wachacha of Cherokee; two sisters, Louisa Grindstaff and Cindy Wachacha, both of Robbinsville; four brothers, Herman and Anderson Wachacha and Dempsey and Leroy Jumper, all of Robbinsville; and five grandchildren.

Lois Sutton

Lois Robinson Sutton, 68, of Macktown Road, Sylva, died unexpectedly Monday, Sept. 4, 2006, at her home after a period of declining health.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday, Sept. 7) in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. James “Bo” Brown officiating. Burial will be in Locust Field Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family was scheduled to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

A daughter of the late George and Maude Dills Robinson, she was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County. She had worked at Sylco as a machine operator and was a member of Locust Field Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Sutton, who died in 1983; seven brothers, Harrison, James and Cecil Robinson and Wimpy, Henry, Ed and Fred Hyatt; and one infant sister, Betty Robinson.

Surviving are two sons, George Sutton of Glenville and John Sutton of Sylva; one sister, Lucy Parker of Clover, S.C.; three brothers, Hoover and Geter Robinson, both of Sylva, and Gentry Hyatt of Barbersville, W.Va.; and two grandchildren.



Ruby Arrington

Ruby Love Mehaffey Arrington, 86, of Balsam, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 3, at Balsam Baptist Church with the Rev. Johnny Swanger officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Johnny Jones, Chad Jones, Jerry Edwards, Frank Childers, Randal Moss, Jeff Arrington, Scott Connor and James Hall.

A native of Jackson County, she was born on Oct. 4, 1919, to the late James Albert and Maude Isabell Foster Mehaffey. She retired from Wellco after 21 years of service. She was the oldest active member of Balsam Baptist Church and had resided in Balsam for more than 75 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Rufus Arrington, who died in 1979; one daughter, Barbara Holder; and one grandson.

Surviving are one son, Harold R. Arrington of Saluda, S.C.; one brother, Billy R. Mehaffey of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; two sisters, Velma Jones of Waynesville and Rena McGee of Old Fort; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

John Young

John William Young, Jr., 78, of Retirement Lane, Sylva, died Monday, Sept. 4, 2006, at his home.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday, Sept. 7) at Victory Baptist Church, with the Revs. Benny Bagwell, Eddie Stillwell and Brent Cochran officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Grandsons will be pallbearers.

The family was scheduled to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Bryant Funeral Home, Franklin, where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

A lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was the son of the late John William Young, Sr. and Lula Ridley Young. He had worked as a mechanic and as a truck driver.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Green Young, who died in 1987, and one daughter, Lillian Young.

Surviving are three daughters, Hilda Young of Highlands, Loretta Gosnell of Sylva, and Tena Hicks of Waldo, Fla.; two sons, William Young of Franklin and Stanley Young of Asheville; three sisters, Arbutus Cochran of Franklin, and Evelyn Franks and Margaret Hyatt, both of Sylva; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

William Coutts, Jr.

William Gordon Coutts, Jr., 65, of Rider Ridge, Whittier, died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2006 at Harris Regional Hospital.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8 at First Baptist Church of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., of which he was a member, with the Rev. John Jones officiating.

He was born in Andover, Mass., to the late William G. Coutts, Sr. and Margretta Hilton Coutts.

He was a veteran of the United States Army and had retired from the fire department in Ft. Lauderdale, where he was a member of the Benevolent Firefighters Association.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Debra Evelyn Coutts Rothman.

Surviving are his wife of 36 years, Kay Crocker Coutts; one son, Donald Edward Coutts of Whittier; one sister, Ruth Conners of Whittier; and one grandson.

Arthur Painter

Arthur Burke Painter, 84, of Sylva, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006, at his residence.

Services were scheduled to be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, at Sylva Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bill Serjak officiating. Burial was to follow at Fairview Memorial Gardens.

A lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a son of the late Will and Lizzie Dee Fullbright Painter.

As a World War II veteran, he served in England, Ireland, and France. He returned to Jackson County to open Painter Construction Company, which he operated for more than 40 years, before retiring at age 80. He was also a member and former deacon at Sylva Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Vera P. Stegall; and one brother, Wm. Clyde Painter.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Jacqueline Burgin Painter; one son, Randall K. Painter of Sylva; two daughters, Debra P. Cowan of Whittier and Julie P. Roddenberry of Vass; one brother, G. York Painter of Waynesville; five grandchildren, one step-grandchild and one great-grandchild.

David Skinner

090706skinnerDavid Walter Skinner, 66, of Paw Paw Cove, Webster, died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006, at Mission Hospitals in Asheville after a period of declining health.

Services will be held at 6:30 p.m. today (Thursday, Sept. 7) in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Josh Hyde and Gary Willet officiating. Interment will be at sea on Oct. 23, 2006, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Pallbearers will be Robert Crisp, Joseph Fritter, Erik Skinner, Joseph Skinner, Scottie Thomas and Troy Willett.

A native of Charles County, Md., he was born June 6, 1940, to the late Walter Edward and Thelma Willett Skinner. A retired officer of the Central Intelligence Agency, he began his career in Washington, D.C., in October 1958. He was stationed in Stutgart, Germany, from 1966 to 1972, where he spent time traveling throughout Europe. In 1972, he transferred to Balboa, Panama, where he worked for two years before returning to Langley, Va. There he continued to serve in the Directorate of Operations in the Near East Division, Latin American Division and Agency Foreign Pouch Services.

Before retiring after 32 years of service, he received several awards and commendations, including the Special Achievement Award, the Exceptional Performance Award, and the Certificate of Distinction. In June 1990, upon retirement, he was presented the Silver Medallion for Honorable Service from Director William Webster.

After moving with his family to Webster, he became an avid fisherman, hunter, and woodworking artist. He joined the Carolina Craftsmen, doing shows throughout the Southeast. His work was featured in national catalogues and shipped throughout the world.

He was preceded in death by his infant sister, Sandra Louise Skinner.

Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Linda Crisp Skinner; two daughters, Charidy Cheree Skinner of Webster and Jacqueline Skinner Allen of Arcadia, Fla.; one son, Scott David Skinner, of Winchester, Va.; one brother, Paul Everett Skinner of Bryans Road, Md.; and five grandchildren.

Marian Roman

Marian Lucinda Roman, 84, of Cullowhee, died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006, at her residence after a long illness.

Services will be held in late May at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla., with the Rev. Nancy Walker officiating.

She was born in Wyoming, Penn., on July 8, 1922, to the late Stanley and Eliza Williamson.

She lived in England with her husband for several years, as well as in several other states before settling in Western North Carolina. She enjoyed nature, cooking, and advocating causes of social justice.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Joseph Roman.

Surviving are one son, Joseph G. Roman of the home; one daughter, Jean Lin, of Saratoga, Calif.; two brothers, Don Williamson of Cashiers and Bob Williamson of Pitman, N.J.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to St. Labre Indian School, Running Strong for American Indian Youth, or a children’s charity of choice.
