Setting record straight on Dogwood Crafters
To the Editor:
It was with interest and amusement that I read the article about the early days of Dogwood Crafters. Some of the events mentioned in the article are incorrect based on my recollection as a founding member.
First, there were less than 12 founding members.
Also, while serving as president in 1979, I asked Wade Wlson, building owner, several times to wait for us to pay the rent because we didn’t have enough money. Several members, including myself, met with the Jackson County Commissioners and requested $1,000, not $2,000 as stated in the article. The commissioners granted our request, although this did not cover rent for the entire year. However, at the end of 1979, we had $1,000 to begin the new year.
Also, in Susie Ray’s book (“Dogwood Crafters: A Success Story”), she says on page 7 that I made corn-shuck dolls. The only corn-shuck doll I ever made was for a class in school when I was in the ninth grade. Annie Lee Bryson, also a founding member, was the corn-shuck doll lady.
