Jets defeat Smoky Mountain in weather-shortened game
Enka knocked Smoky Mountain from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 2-0 non-conference soccer victory on Aug. 30 at Enka.
The game was suspended with 17:39 to play due to lightning. After a delay of some 40 minutes, the contest was called.
“We did not play a very good first half,” Coach Dolphus Brown said. “I don’t know if we all realized Enka was going to be a typical Enka team They’re very physical. We weren’t in a real good rhythm in the first half.”

The Jets led 1-0 at intermission on Corey Trantham’s penalty kick following a foul in the box at the 33:43 mark.
“We came out in the second half and dominated even though they ended up getting a goal and we didn’t,” Brown said. “We had a couple of sequences where we camped out in front of their net but didn’t finish.”
Shane Henson scored the Jets’ second goal at the 61:02 mark.
“They brought it down the left side and got a foul,” the coach said. “The ball ended up being played into the box. The Henson kid got it and we had him double teamed, but he stabbed at it. He shot from about 10 yards.”
As the storm approached, the players picked up their intensity level, Brown said.
During the weather delay, the coach said he worked on some adjustments, which he felt would have been successful.
“Our guys were feeling the challenge,” he said. “I would have liked to have seen how it ended up.”
The Mustangs (4-1) had a 9-5 edge in shots. SM’s Cody Bryson made three saves. Josh Payne had four saves for the Jets.
The Mustang JVs are 0-2-1 after a 1-1 tie. The Jets led 1-0 at halftime, but SM tied it in the second half on Adam Ray’s goal with an assist by Keller Berry.
“We outplayed them,” Coach Chris Tyson said. “They’re really coming together. The score did not reflect how well they played.”
