Enka hands SM year’s first loss in volleyball

Enka handed Smoky Mountain its first loss of the volleyball season 25-18, 25-16, 25-13 on Aug. 29 at the SM gym.

“It was a total team effort,” Coach Ken Walker said of the loss. “After four matches we’re about where I thought we’d be, but I thought we would have a better effort (against Enka).”

SM (3-1) had its best showing in the first game. Cassie Randall served three points bringing the Lady Mustangs within 7-6. They took a 16-12 lead after Amy Haggard served five points and Brittany Gilbert had a kill. The Sugar Jets turned things around with a 13-2 spurt the rest of the game.

Enka held leads of 15-9 and 19-11 in game two and was never threatened.

The third game wasn’t even that close as the Sugar Jets took a 13-4 lead and never looked back.

Amy Haggard led in kills with seven, and Sarah Haggard recorded 16 assists.

Amy Haggard was tops in service points with eight and didn’t miss in 14 serves. Megan Taylor got both of her serves in. Randall served 90 percent.

The coaches noted there were 13 passing errors and nine service errors while 14 balls hit the floor.

The Lady Mustang JVs fell to 1-3 with a 25-14, 25-9 loss.

“We had a bad game,” Coach Natasha Wilson said. “It was disappointing after our win the night before.”
