20 apple varieties all on same tree
Jim Sellers of Sylva’s Monteith Branch area shows off one of the 20 apple varieties he has growing on a single tree in his home orchard. According to Sellers, people kept giving him cuttings, but he didn’t have space for a lot of trees. His creative solution was to begin grafting the cuttings onto a single winesap tree about 15 years ago, and the 18-year-old tree now has red and green apples of all shapes and sizes growing on its branches. Most of the varieties on Sellers’ special tree are “heritage” apples – the ones once found around mountain homesteads – and include Morgan, Granny Smith, Grimes Gold and Morgan. Sellers, whose grandfather also raised apples, said he’s always been interested in plants and gardening and returned to the family homeplace after he retired from the Air Force. – Herald photo by Nick Breedlove.
