DOWNTOWN SYLVA GALLERIES will hold their monthly art stroll this Friday, Sept. 1, from 7 until 9 p.m. Participating galleries include Gallery One, Penumbra and It’s by Nature. Refreshments and live music will be available at some locations, and It’s by Nature and Gallery One will open new exhibits. See page 1C for information on the featured artists.


CHILDREN’S STORYTIME at City Lights on Saturday, Sept. 2, at 11 a.m. will be all about birds and will feature a special live guest, Daisy the Cockatoo. For more information, call the store at 586-9499.

BEAR NECESSITIES CHAINSAW CARVERS will demonstrate their technique on Fridays and Saturdays through December from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the Whistle Stop Mall in Franklin. Cullowhee carvers Fred and John Bauknecht will also have their creations for sale. For more information, call 293-2121.


MOUNTAIN PROJECTS will change its Haywood County office hours starting Friday, Sept. 1. The office will be open Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Friday from 7:30 a.m. to noon.

COFFEE GROUNDS recently held a ribbon cutting ceremony with the Jackson County Chamber Ambassadors. The shop is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. and on Saturdays until 1 p.m. It serves espresso-based drinks including coffee, tea, smoothies and shakes. Homemade cheesecakes, muffins, and bagels are made fresh daily by owners Lorri and Christa Smith. For more information, stop by the Dillsboro Court coffee house or call 631-5200.

STONEY’S CRAB SHACK recently celebrated its grand opening with Jackson County Chamber of Commerce ambassadors. The restaurant, located on Broad Street, is open seven days a week and will have live music on selected weekends. For more information, call 586-9807.

SHEPHERD CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER staff and children display their five-star license. The Southwestern Child Development Center is the first child care facility in Jackson County to receive a five-star rating, the highest possible in NC, under the new rated license system. The center was rated based on the education of staff and the environmental ratings (interactions and activites) in the classroom. Shepherd Learning Center provides care for children who are infants through five-years old and they are currently taking applications.
