Railsback is eighth in year’s first meet
Smoky Mountain’s Cadence Railsback finished eighth in the women’s open division at the Western North Carolina Cross Country Carnival held Saturday at Hendersonville’s Jackson Park.
Railsback posted a time of 23:28 in the season’s first meet, which drew 127 runners in the division.
“I was real pleased with Cadence,” Coach Lawson Hopper said. “She’s not anywhere near the shape she will be in. This was a really good start for her.”
The Lady Mustangs finished 10th among 13 teams. Completing their top five were:
Aaron Young, 64th, 28:39; Emily Cowan, 76th, 29:43; Chelsea Lydeen, 88th, 30:49; and Emily Butcher, 96th, 31:43.
On the men’s side, SM’s top finisher was Anthony Stephens, who placed 32nd among 207 runners in 20:49. Rounding out the top five were:
Trey Franks, 118th, 23:27; Paul Hammer, 120th, 23:28; John Cody, 138th, 24:13; and Josh Seay, 201st, 30:02.
The Mustangs finished 15th out of 20 teams.
That wasn’t too bad considering bus problems kept the team from arriving until 15 minutes before the men’s meet began, according to Hopper.
“The guys’ warm-up was a jog from the bus to the table,” he said.
“It was a good meet to start with,” Hopper added. “Now we know where we stand, and we can work on trying to improve the times.”
