Mustang soccer team claims victory at North Buncombe
Smoky Mountain’s soccer team scored with the help of a North Buncombe own goal in the first two minutes and breezed to a 6-0 win on Aug. 23 at Weaverville.
Grant Schallock and Richard Ramirez both had two goals and an assist for the Mustangs.
“I felt good about a lot of things, and one of those was we kept our poise when the game became very physical,” Coach Dolphus Brown said. “Our guys stepped up and played hard. They didn’t back down, but also didn’t get dirty.”
The own goal came with less than two minutes elapsed.

“Grant made a cross from the left, and it bounced off one of their players and deflected back into the net,” Brown said.
The Mustangs made it 2-0 at the 10-minute mark when Schallock scored with an assist from Joey Cox.
“Joey played the ball to Grant, who moved around their player and turned with it and kicked it in from 12 yards out,” the coach said.
Schallock struck again with 22 seconds left in the half for a 3-0 margin. Cox and Matt Dougherty both provided assists.
“Matt played the ball from the left side,” Brown said. “Joey tapped it to the far post to Grant, and he scored from 8 yards out.”
After both teams went scoreless the first half of the second period, SM erupted for three goals in a span of 10 minutes to turn the game into a rout.
Ramirez, a freshman, scored his first career goal at the 62-minute mark with an assist from Schallock upping the lead to 4-0.
“The ball was played out of the midfield by Grant, and Richard put it in from 10 yards out,” the coach said.
Martin Davis made it 5-0 when he scored at the 68-minute mark. Ramirez and David Cheatham were both credited with assists.
“David had played the ball to Richard out of the midfield,” Brown said. ”Richard’s shot hit the cross bar, and Martin headed it in. Martin just wouldn’t quit.”
Ramirez concluded the scoring at the 72-minute mark by getting the rebound of his own shot and putting the ball in the net.
“The play started with a throw-in from Matt Dougherty,” the coach said. “Richard beat two or three players. He missed the first shot but then put it in.”
The Mustangs had a 20-7 advantage in shots. SM’s Cody Bryson made six saves, and Eli Corwin had five.
North Buncombe won the JV game 2-0.
“We had a much better all-around effort than in the Hendersonville scrimmage,” Coach Chris Tyson said. “Everybody stepped up.”
Those he singled out included Zach O’Halloran, Brandon Norris and Jason Grimes.
