Commissioners are right – WCU should restore Camp’s name

We’re glad to see our elected leaders taking a stand on the side of local history, and we hope to see a similar outcome when Western Carolina University trustees discuss the same topic.

Led by former Camp Laboratory School student and current county commissioner and Department of Transportation board member Conrad Burrell, Jackson County’s commissioners voted unanimously two weeks ago to ask WCU to eliminate “University Outreach Center” from its campus directory and instead restore the building to its original name – the Cordelia Camp Building.

Named for Camp, a longtime director of student teaching at WCU, the old lab school, known to the community as Camp Lab, educated at least two generations of Cullowhee students in the three decades between the school’s opening in 1964 and closing in 1994, when local school children moved to Cullowhee Valley.

When McKee stopped being a school it didn’t stop being McKee. When Bird was no longer the administration building, it got to keep its name. And so should Camp.

Good news leads the way this week

Our top stories this week celebrate two women who do their best for their community and their school, and they’ve got the awards to prove it.

Longtime civic leader, professional volunteer and former downtown association president Phyllis Foxx received the Duke Energy Citizenship and Service Award last week. It’s hard for us to see how the Chamber of Commerce committee could have made a better choice. When something needs doing around town, Phyllis is always right there, tirelessly advocating and organizing to get a job done. We know her leadership of Sylva Partners in Renewal during the Streetscape project was crucial to that effort’s success.

And Linda Haggard, who apparently performs similar duties at Smoky Mountain High School has been recognized as Jackson County’s Teacher of the Year. Just reading Linda’s list of activities – student council advisor, spirit club advisor, department head, athletic booster club officer, school musical director – makes us tired, but Linda’s spirit never flags.

Congratulations to both Phyllis and Linda. They do us all proud.
