‘No quarry,’ residents tell state
 |
Tuckasegee residents packed a Justice Center courtroom to hear some 30 speakers, including Commissioners’ Chairman Brian McMahan and state Sen. John Snow, voice their opposition to a planned quarry in their community. Officials from the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources were in Sylva Tuesday (Aug. 22) for a public hearing on Carolina Boulder and Stone LLC’s application for a permit to mine and crush stone at a 56-acre site just east of the N.C 107/N.C. 281 intersection. Every speaker opposed the proposed quarry, and each received applause from the crowd. Cherrie Moses, above at podium, objected to the planned mine because she said the site likely contained important Cherokee artifacts; other speakers cited a variety of health and environmental concerns. No representatives from Carolina Boulder spoke during the almost two-hour hearing. DENR officials will keep the hearing record open until Friday, Sept. 1, for additional written comments, which can be mailed to Kenneth Taylor, hearing officer, at 1601 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-1601. A complete hearing report will be available in next week’s newspaper. – Herald photo by Nick Breedlove
