STONEY’S CRAB SHACK will hold its grand opening Saturday, Aug. 19, with a live band, Moving Parts, and live broadcast on WRGC starting at 4 p.m. They plan give-aways and drink specials from the full bar. The restaurant is located at 53 Broad St. behind the Reach Thrift Store and Merita Bread Store. Stoney’s serves meals fresh and prepared to order and is owned by Stoney Bearden and Joe St. Pierre. Stoney has help from his four daughters and wife in running the restaurant. “The reason I opened the restaurant is because of my daughters,” he said. “I wanted something that we could all take part in doing, and I know this area is a great place to raise children.”
PAPOU’S WINE SHOP will host a wine and beer tasting Saturday, Aug. 19, from 2 to 5 p.m. They will have a special selection of German wines and foods made with wine, along with fresh German ales from Sylva’s Heinzelmannchen brewery.
THE 24TH ANNUAL CHEROKEE BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL will be held Thursday, Aug. 17, through Saturday, Aug. 19, at Happy Holiday Campground. The event begins each day at noon and continues through 11 p.m., with an open stage at 11 a.m. Thursday’s lineup includes: the James King Band, the Larry Stephenson Band, Lost and Found, the Isaacs, Larry Sparks, the Lonesome Ramblers, and the legendary Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys. Friday’s performers will include the Steep Canyon Rangers, Goldwing Express, Dry Branch Fire Squad, Cherryholmes, Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, and Rhonda Vincent and the Rage. Taking the stage on Saturday will be Raymond Fairchild and the Maggie Valley Boys, Dry Branch Fire Squad, the Grascals, the Lewis Family, Bobby Osborne and the Rocky Top Express, and the Del McCoury Band. PLAN TO ATTEND the Chamber’s annual Picnic in the Park scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 24, at 5:30 p.m. Bring a side dish, your family and a folding chair to the Sylva Park. THE “TOUR DE TUCK,” the Chamber’s inaugural bicycle challenge is Saturday, Aug. 19, and some 200 riders and their families are expected in the area for the weekend. The Chamber needs volunteers to assist with this event. You don’t need any experience – you just need to be available. SONGWRITER RANDY SHARP, who has penned several number one songs, will headline the next “Songwriters in the Round” show on Saturday, Aug. 19, at the historic Balsam Mountain Inn. Joining Sharp will be talented singer-songwriters Pam Rose and Jill Colucci. Rose, who’s been nominated for two Grammy Awards, has won praise for her powerful alliance with longtime writing partner Mary Ann Kennedy. Together they comprise the duo Kennedy Rose. As special guests of Emmylou Harris, the duo performed twice for President Bill Clinton and at a Nobel Peace Prize presentation in Norway. The Songwriters session takes place in the inn’s 100-seat restaurant and is accompanied by a gourmet dinner buffet.
