SMHS construction continues

081706smhsconstruction
Work is under way to expand the Smoky Mountain High School campus to the former Jones property county officials purchased about five years ago. Overhead power lines are being buried along with telecommunication lines. The construction will allow for more parking and better emergency vehicle access to classroom buildings, according to Assistant Superintendent Steve Jones. Department of Transportation personnel are improving Jones Road behind the school, and plan more construction after the campus site work is finished, Jones said. “For now it will provide more parking area, but in the future potentially, we hope it will be home to new ball fields, a gym and a fine arts building. It’s final use has not yet been determined.” – Herald photo by Nick Breedlove
