Tommie Key
Tommie Ford Key Jr., 78, of Sylva, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2006, at his residence after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 14, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Josh Hyde officiating. Burial was in Parris Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Phillip Melton, Felix Barnes, Mark Burris, Doug Cochran, Dan Vreeland, and Ray Stephens.
A native of Hale County, Ala., he lived in Jackson County for the past 23 years. He retired from Gulf States Paper Company with 35 years of service and worked for more than 20 years Jackson Paper Mfg. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church. He was the son of the late Tommie Ford Sr. and Shelby Langford Key.
Surviving are his wife of 14 years, Tammy Buchanan Key; one daughter Donna Grimball of Waynesville; one son Larry Key of Marion Junction, Ala.; two sisters, Jean Nicholson and Maxine Smith, both of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and four grandchildren.

Fred Reineke
Fred William Reineke, 84, of Cherokee, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2006, at Tsali Care Center after a period of declining health.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, at Yellowhill Veterans Cemetery. Military rites were conducted by Steve Youngdeer VFW Post 8013.
A native of Defiance, Ohio, he had lived in Jackson County since 1996. He was a retired supervisor with Champion Spark Plug. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was the son of the late Fred and Elizabeth Ludwick Reineke.
Surviving are his wife of eight years, Charlotte Ann Bradley Reineke; three daughters, Jody Adams, Sharron Bradley and Susan Jones, all of Cherokee; two sons, Glenn J. Bradley Jr. and Judson G. Bradley, both of Cherokee; and five grandchildren.

Bobbie Nell Gunter
Bobbie Nell Ensley Gunter, 74, of Sylva, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2006, at Asheville’s Mission Hospitals.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, Aug. 17) at Scotts Creek Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Revs. Rich Peoples and Eddie Stillwell officiating. Burial will be in Love Cemetery.
The family was scheduled to receive friends Wednesday (Aug. 16) from 7 to 9 p.m. at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late Haynes and Salma Carnes Ensley.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Olin “Tater” Ensley and Logan Ensley; and a sister, Mildred Stillwell.
Surviving are a daughter, Glenda Lee Miller of Lawrenceville, Ga.; three sons, Tony Gunter of Milton, N.H., Terry Gunter of Marion, and Michael Gunter of Whittier; two sisters, Helen Walker and Sue Cowan, both of Sylva; one brother, Mack Ensley of Battleground, Wash.; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Allen Smith
Allen D. Smith, 42, of Cherokee, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2006, at Cherokee Indian Hospital.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 14, at Wrights Creek Baptist Church, with the Revs. Dan Lambert and Roland Whitaker officiating. Burial was in Lucy Long Cemetery.
A native of Swain County he had lived in Jackson County all his life. He was a laborer and an avid outdoorsman. He was a member of Cherokee United Methodist Church. He was a son of Samuel Allen Smith of Cherokee and the late Dorcas Owl Smith.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, William Joseph Smith.
Surviving in addition to his father are, two daughters, Chasity and Kyra Smith, both of Cherokee; three sisters, Lucy Dean Reed of Cherokee, Caroline Winstead of Barnardsville, and Sharon Smith of Robbinsville.

Frankie Farmer
Frankie Beck Farmer, 69, of Rocky Point, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2006, after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, at Peace Baptist Church in Wilmington with the Rev. Rudy Shepard officiating. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
She was born Dec. 11, 1936, in Jackson County. She and her family owned and operated the Convenient Food Mart on Masonboro Loop Road for many years during the 1970s. She was an active and founding member, serving as the leader in the prayer chain, of Peace Baptist Church. She was the only child of the late Roy T. and Eddie W. Beck.
She was also preceded in death by her husband Thomas E. Farmer, who died in 2000.
Surviving are three sons, Tony Farmer and Alan Farmer, both of Wilmington, and Gary Farmer of Rocky Point; one daughter, Teri Garris of Rocky Point; and four grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Peace Baptist Church, 320 Military Cutoff Rd., Wilmington, NC 28405.

Gary Safrit
Gary Safrit, 57, of Tuckasegee, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital after a short illness.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, Aug. 17) at East Sylva Baptist Church with the Revs. Tommy James and Charles Stevens officiating. Burial will be in Cathey’s Cemetery.
The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Born Oct. 29, 1948, in Salisbury, he received a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from Appalachian State University. He earned a master’s in counseling and school administration from North Carolina A&T. He was an educator for 36 years, serving as a teacher, coach and administrator.
He spent 27 years at West Rowan High School and also worked at South Edgecombe Middle School and South Edgecombe High School. He was assistant principal at Blue Ridge School, a post he had held since July 2004, at the time of his death.
He was the son of the late George and Grace Curlee Safrit.
Surviving are his wife, Judy Diana Rogers Safrit; one daughter, April Michelle Thompson of Salisbury; two sons, Robert Alan “Buddy” Safrit and Gary Donald Safrit, both of Salisbury; two brothers, Richard Safrit of Burlington and Jeff Safrit of Salisbury; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the West Rowan Booster Club.

Martha Thorman
Martha “Marty” Thorman, 53, of Cherokee, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, at her residence.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. Burial will be at a later date.
A native of Nebraska, she had lived in Cherokee for the past six years. She was a chef at Harrah’s.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Scott Thorman.
Surviving are two daughters, Melissa Ann Hudson of Bakersville, Calif. and McKen-zie Holloran Thorman of Cherokee; two sons, Michael Jon Thorman of Whittier and Michell Burton Thorman of Lakeland, Fla.; and 12 grandchildren.
Martha Dehart
Martha Jean Dehart, 59, of the Ela community died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2006.
Services were held at noon Saturday, Aug. 6, at Ela Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Foster officiating.
She was a native of Haywood County and worked as a registered nurse. She was the daughter of the late David Carl and Allie Mae Miller Greenwood.
Surviving is her husband, MacArthur Byrd Dehart.
