Mildred Raxter
Mildred Sharp Raxter, 78, of Andrews, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2006, at her residence.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at Andrews First Baptist Church with the Revs. Dr. Tommy Lamb and Fred Lunsford officiating. Burial was in Valleytown Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Gary Rogers, Danny Anderson, Horlace Sealy, Lane Raxter, Virgil Gibson and Walter Raxter.
A native of Cherokee County, she lived in Sylva for more than 20 years before returning to Andrews. She was a former member of First Baptist Church of Sylva and had been a member of First Baptist Church of Andrews for the past 23 years. She was secretary of her Sunday school class, secretary/treasurer of the Ruth Bagwell Mission Group and secretary of Young at Hearts senior adult church group.
She helped organize the Jackson County chapter of Reach to Recovery and was a breast cancer survivor for 31 years. She was the daughter of the late Leonard Jasper and Flora Jane Gregory Sharp.
Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Don Raxter; one son, Hugh Raxter of Montgomery, Ala.; three sisters, Gladys Raxter of Andrews, Joanne Rogers of Marble, and Helen May of Burlington; and one granddaughter.

Frank Christie
Frank Deb Christie Jr., 72, of Rockingham, died Monday, July 31, 2006 at Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, at Temple Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Joey Byrd officiating. Burial was in Richmond Memorial Park.
He was born Nov. 17, 1933, in Durham, to the late Frank D. and Sallie Mae Stede Christie.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Berdell Alexander Christie; two sons, Mark Christie of Winston-Salem, and Ronald Christie of Rockingham; one brother, Thomas Eugene Christie of Alexandria, Va.; and four grandchildren.

Erna Shaffer
Erna Shaffer, 86, of Sylva’s Buff Creek community, died Monday, July 24, 2006, at her residence.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, at Buff Creek Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Gerald Morris officiating. Burial will be in Addie Cemetery.
She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., but had lived in Jackson County for the past several years. She was the daughter of the late Phillip and Edna Bolton Shaffer.

Ricardo Santos
Ricardo Celestino Ochoa delos Santos, 27, of Bee Tree Road, Glenville, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2006.
Services will be held at 7 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 13, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The body will be returned to Mexico for services and burial.
Mildred Nicholson
Mildred Fisher Nicholson, 84, of Glenville, died Friday, June 30, 2006, at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital after an extended illness.
Services were held at noon Monday, July 3, at Hamburg Baptist Church, with the Rev. Lester Sutton officiating. Burial was in Hamburg Cemetery.
A lifelong resident of Glenville, she retired from the U.S. Postal Service as postmaster of Glenville. She was a daughter of the late Samuel R. and Edith Pruett Fisher.
She was also preceded in death by her husband Sterling Nicholson, who died in 1996; two brothers, Clarence and James Fisher; and one sister, Lillian Lusk.
Surviving are three sons, Gary Lewis of Glenville, William Samuel of Marietta, Ga., and Allen Leon Fisher of Herington, Kan.; one brother, Samuel Fisher of Marietta; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Carrie Allen
Carrie Lucille Green York Allen, 84, of Whittier, died Monday, July 31, 2006, at her residence.
Services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, August 3, at Almond Baptist Mission, with the Rev. Robert Tucker officiating. Burial was in Locust Field Cemetery.
A native of Haywood County, she had lived in Jackson and Swain counties most of her life. A member of Almond Baptist Mission, she was the daughter of the late Walter Thomas and Emma Mae Messer Green.
She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Ralph York and Troy Allen.
Surviving are three daughters, Emma Hamby and Joyce Nuedling, both of Whittier, and Dana Lupo of Charleston, S.C.; three sons Carroll York and Walter York, both of Bryson City, and David York of Whittier; one sister, Fanny Dorland of Bethel; 21 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Elaine Spencer
Elaine Hawkins Spencer, 85, of Sylva, died unexpectedly Thursday, Aug. 3, 2006, at her residence.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at Jehovah’s Witnesses Kingdom Hall with Elder William Gersky officiating. Burial will be in Sussex, N.J., at a later date.
A native of Belgrade, Maine, she had lived in Jackson County for the past three years. She was a daughter of the late Frasher and Fanny Fowler Hawkins.
She was also preceded in death by her husband Charles Spencer who died in 1966; an infant son; two sisters, Dorothy and Laura; and two brothers, Norman and Wilbur.
Surviving are two daughters, Gail Giesler of Sylva and Janet Bowman of Phoenix, Ariz.; three sons, Dean Spencer of Sarasota, Fla., and Jerald and Adrian Spencer, both of Sylva; two sisters, Joan Esman of Monmouth, Maine, and Pat Morrisett of Gardiner, Maine; two brothers, Raymond Hawkins of Auburn, Maine, and David Hawkins of Maine; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

David Deitz
David Coleman Deitz, 95, of Sylva’s Savannah community, died Saturday, Aug. 5, at Harris Regional Hospital after a short illness.
Services were held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Revs. Robert Blanton and Dan Styles officiating. Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9. in Wesleyana Methodist Church Cemetery.
He was born Sept. 21, 1912, to the late Aseph and Rufie Buchanan Deitz.
He was also preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Ruby Cabe Deitz; four brothers, Allen, Mack, Marcellas, and Rufus Deitz; two sisters, Mary Etta Cabe and Violet Jane Bumgarner; and an infant daughter, Linda Lou Deitz.
Surviving are two sons, Joe and Bill Deitz, both of Sylva; one daughter, Sandra Deitz of Sylva; one sister Leila Huntley of Asheville; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
