Father, son injured in Saturday wreck

By Carey Phillips

A Tennessee man and his son were seriously injured Saturday morning in a two-vehicle accident south of Dillsboro.

Travis Williams, 33, of White Pine, Tenn., was listed in serious condition Tuesday afternoon at Mission Hospitals in Asheville. His 6-year-old son, DeAndre, was in critical condition in Mission’s Intensive Care Unit, according to a hospital representative.

Travis Williams was traveling south on U.S. 23-441 between Sutton Branch and Greens Creek when his 1995 Hyundai was struck head-on by a 2001 Ford pickup truck driven by 17-year-old Michael Prindiville of Sylva, according to Trooper Mike McLeod of the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Prindiville was heading north around 10:38 a.m. when he lost control of the pick-up, crossed the median and struck the Williams vehicle, McLeod said.

Speed on Prindiville’s part was a contributing factor in the wreck, and charges against him are pending, McLeod said.

DeAndre Williams was airlifted from the scene to Mission while his father was taken by ambulance.

Travis Williams’ 10-year-old daughter, Shenice, was also transported by ambulance to the Asheville hospital, where she was treated and released, according to McLeod.

Prindiville was taken in a private vehicle to Harris Regional Hospital and was treated and released, the trooper said.

At least one lane of the highway was closed for 90 minutes, McLeod said. The road was completely shut down for the helicopter to land.
