The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Sarah Garner

Sarah Jo Stillwell Garner, 81, of James, Ga., died Thursday, July 20, 2006.

Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 23, in the James Cemetery in Jones County, Ga., with the Rev. Gary Thomas officiating.

She was born in Jackson County and was a homemaker and a member of Elam Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late F. E. and Sophia Bishop Stillwell.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Garner Sr., and a brother, F. E. “Buddy” Stillwell, Jr.

Surviving are a son, Gerald “Jerry” Garner, Jr. of Gray, Ga.; two daughters, Dovie Matheny of Middleburg, Fla. and Shirley Barton of Gray; one brother, Coleman Stillwell; one sister, Sue Sanders; seven grandchildren and 14 great- grandchildren.

Couey-Reece-Stanley Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Betty Nations

Betty Lou Brooks Nations, of Whittier, died Sunday, July 30, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Johnny Davis, Johnny Nations, and Larry Nations officiating. Burial was in Nations Creek Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Zeb Hall, Tim Nations, Clarence Hall, Gary Brooks, Greg Jamison, and Eugene Jones.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she worked at Sylco as an inspector, and was a member of Wilmot Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Floyd and Margaret Green Brooks.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ira Nations, who died in 2003; three brothers, Esley, Eulas and Allen Brooks; and a sister, Iris Nations.

Surviving are three sons, the Rev. Larry and Mike Nations, both of Whittier, and the Rev. Johnny Nations of Sevierville, Tenn.; two sisters, Amy Hall of Franklin, and Stella Mae Buchanan of Sylva; one brother, Lewis Brooks of Whittier; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Rachel Hill

Rachel Hill, 42, of Cherokee, died Saturday, July 29, 2006, at Mission Hospitals in Asheville, after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1, at Big Cove Baptist Church, with the Revs. Bo Parris and Jerry Orr officiating. Burial was in the Hill Family Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Brandon Ward, Chris Hill, Joe Ward, Gene Stigman, Eugene Hill, Keith Pinnix, Hugh Queen and Michael George.

A native of Swain County, she lived most of her life in Jackson County. She was a member of Qualla Art and Crafts Co-op, where she was a basket weaver. She attended the Evangelistic Tabernacle Church in Bryson City. She was a daughter of Golinda Armachain Hill of Cherokee and the late Jacob J. Hill.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Jeannette Hill Ward, and a brother, Dennis Reuben Hill.

Surviving in addition to her mother, are a daughter, Cassandra Hill of Cherokee; two sons, Christopher and Jonathan Hill, both of Cherokee; four sisters, Laura Pinnix, Maxine Stigman, Lucetta Ward and Mary Hill, all of Cherokee; one brother, Calvin Hill of Cherokee, and one grandchild.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Ola Deitz

Ola Beasley Deitz, 80, of Sylva, died Thursday, July 27, 2006, at CMC-Mercy Hospital in Charlotte, after a brief illness.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 30, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Mike Farmer and Scott Bortz officiating. Burial was in Keener Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Mark Russell, Jeff Kincaid, Matt Teague, Coleman Deitz, Clint Teague and Thad Deitz.

She was born Dec. 25, 1925. She was a member of Scotts Creek Baptist Church and a homemaker. She later worked at Heritage Quilts and Walker’s Cleaners until her retirement. She was a daughter of the late Harvey and Lena Beasley.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Deitz; and two sisters Alice Foxx and Mattie Deitz.

She is survived by one son, the Rev. Dr. Phillip Deitz of Macclesfield; one daughter, Dinah Pinnell of Indian Trail; four sisters, Etta Frizzell, Winnie Dillard, Marie Parker, Evelyn Wellmon; one brother, Carol Beasley; five grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Memorials may be made to the Memorial Bible Program, The Gideons International Gaston North Camp, P.O. Box 536, Cherryville, N.C. 28021.



Emma McMahan

Emma Lee Buchanan McMahan, 96, of Sylva, died Tuesday, July 25, 2006, after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 27, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, with the Revs. Sherrill Ammons and Ray Fox officiating. Burial was in Greens Creek Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was an avid gardener and a member of Greens Creek Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Thomas Lawson and Bessie McMahan Buchanan.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Adam Oscar McMahan, who died in 1973; a daughter, Robbie Bernice McMahan; a sister, Zilla McMahan; and a brother, James Jake Buchanan.

Surviving are four daughters, Addie Henson, Bessie Brooks, Docia McGaha and Rebecca Wheatley, all of Sylva; one son Tommy McMahan of Saluda, S.C.; four sisters, Marie Jones and Jessie Hall, both of Sylva, Ruby Greene of Florida, and Hazel Jones of Franklin; one brother, Adam Buchanan of Sylva; 13 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.



Frances Webb

Frances Ann Smith Webb, 82, of Sylva, died Monday, July 31, 2006.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. today (Thursday, Aug. 3), at Lovedale Baptist Church, with the Revs. J.D. Grant, Danny Conseen and Mike Farmer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family was scheduled to receive friends Wednesday, Aug. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home.

She was a daughter of the late Pritchard and Lucy Massey Smith.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Wayman W. Webb; three brothers, Paul, Buddy and Pritchard Smith; three sisters, Louise Queen, Florence Smith and Ellen Brown.

Surviving are one son, Keith Webb; one daughter, Gloria Bridges; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.



Josephine Parker

Josephine Parker, 58, of Sylva, died Thursday, July 27, 2006.

Services will be announced.

Moody Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
