July 4 fireworks display will not be rescheduled

By Justin Goble

County residents wanting to see the July 4 fireworks display from the courthouse steps will have to wait another year.

Officials from the Jackson County Recreation and Parks Department announced Monday (July 31) that this year’s display, which was called off due to inclement weather, will not be rescheduled.

Rec Department officials had hoped to hold the display at a later date, but scheduling conflicts will prevent that from happening, according to Jeff Carpenter, rec department director.

Melrose Pyrotechnics, the same company that produces Stone Mountain’s laser and fireworks show and was used at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic games, was scheduled to shoot off more than 1,600 fireworks during this year’s celebration, Carpenter said.

However, thunder, lightning and heavy rain washed out the planned pyrotechnics for the first time since the show became an annual event several years ago.

Until the rain started around 8:15 p.m. that Tuesday evening, thousands of people enjoyed food, music and contests downtown in anticipation of the big event.
