The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Louise Sutton

Louise Muse Sutton, 68, of Cullowhee, died Wednesday, July 5, 2006, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center, after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Friday, July 7, at Cullowhee United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. David Reeves officiating.

She was born in Statesville on Oct. 13, 1937, to the late Margaret Sloan Muse. She graduated from Statesville High School in 1956, and she held a degree in secretarial science from Lees-McRae College.

She had lived in Cullowhee since 1969. She recently retired from the church secretary position after serving 31 years.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Lewis F. Sutton; two daughters, Nancy Parks Sutton of Kernersville and Laura Sutton Williams of Fort Mill, S.C.; a sister, Margaret Muse of Beaufort; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Cullowhee United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 1267, Cullowhee, N.C. 28723.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Farrell Costello

Thomas Farrell Costello of Sylva died June 28, 2006 at Haywood Regional Medical Center, after a long illness.

A funeral mass will be held at 5:30 p.m. today (Thursday, July 13) at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Jane Costello; and one brother, William Costello of New Jersey.



Joe Hensley

Walter Joe Hensley, 71, of Waynesville, died Thursday, July 6, 2006, at his residence.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 8, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses with the Elder Gary Maewether conducting.

He was born Jan. 4, 1935 to the late Frank and Charlotte Shuler Hensley. He was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and a Ministerial Servant.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Hensley; a daughter Tamara Jo Parr of Waynesville; three brothers, James Hensley of Waynesville, Paul Hensley and Harold Hensley, both of Sylva; two sisters, Frankie Jean Ammons of Waynesville, and Sarah B. Allison of Sylva; and one granddaughter.

Garrett Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Keith Henry

Keith Franklin Henry, 45, of Watson Branch Road, Cullowhee, died Tuesday, July 4, 2006, at his residence.

In keeping with his wishes, no services are planned. His creamated remains will be scattered in the mountains.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a self-employed handyman. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and a 1979 graduate of Cullowhee High School. He was a member of Trout Creek Baptist Church. He was the son of Barbara Hoyle Henry of Cullowhee and the late Frank D. Henry.

Surviving in addition to his mother are, three sisters, Cathy Fortner, Tammy Hoyle and Debbie McCall, of all of Cullowhee.

Melton-Riddle is in charge of arrangements.



Gary Hooper

Gary G. “Pete” Hooper, 66, of Silver Springs, Fla., died Tuesday, June 13, 2006.

He was born in Sylva and graduated from Sylva High School in 1958. He then attended Western Carolina University and Baylor University.

He was a member of the United States Marine Corps. He was also a member of the Maricamp Road Church of Christ, a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and a retired switchman for Sprint Telephone. He was a son of the late Dexter and Edna Hooper.

He was also preceded in death by brothers Delos Hooper III, and William W. Hooper, and grandparents Dr. D.D. and Rebecca Hooper and George and Martha Greene.

Surviving are his wife of 24 years, Sue Hooper; a daughter Triscilla Harding of Franklin, Ky.; two sisters Ann Hudson and Talina Royer, and a brother, Max Hooper, all of North Carolina.

Daisy Williamson

Daisy Shuler Williamson, 96, of Trinity, died Saturday, July 1, 2006, after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 6, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Rev. Wiley Gibson officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were her sons.

She was a Jackson County native and a former resident of Macon County, where she was a member of Black Mountain Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Oscar and Alice Owens Coggins.

She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Sam Shuler and Meldrun Williamson; five brothers, Wesley, Leonard, Raymond, Fred, and Dewey Coggins; and three sisters, Dollie Brendle, Sallie Coggins, and Marie Coggins.

Surviving are six sons, Howard Shuler of Virginia Beach, Va., Ray Shuler of Lawton, Okla., Vance Shuler of Asheboro, John Shuler of Kingsport, Tenn., Leroy Shuler of Portland, Tenn. and Verlon Shuler of Monks Corner, S.C.; one daughter, Florence Fox of Franklin; one step-daughter, Inez Minnor of South Hills, Va.; one sister, Myrtle Ashe of Shelby; 20 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren.



Thornton Cabe

Thornton Baker Cabe, 74, of Winder, Ga., died Thursday, July 6, 2006.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 10, at Winder First Baptist Church with the Rev. John Talley officiating. Burial was in Old Savannah Cemetery.

He was born in Jackson County. He was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War and was the founder of Cabe Enterprises. He opened the Winder KFC 30 years ago and went on to build seven Western Sizzlin’ Steakhouses, three KFCs and three Jeffery’s Sports Grills. He was still active in his business at the time of his death.

He was the son of the late Thornton Baker and Annie Reed Cabe. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Bradley.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years Frankie E. Cabe; one son Jeffrey Cabe of Winder; two daughters, Beth Rosenzweig and Melanie Maddox, both of Winder; two sisters, Irene Fisher and Gladys Clark, both of Sylva; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Mountain Lake Medical Center or Rabun EMS, 196 Ridgecrest Circle, Clayton, Ga. 30525.

Lucille Blackburn

Lucille Blackburn, 83, of Cope Creek Road, Sylva, died Monday, July 3, 2006, at Skyland Care Center after a brief illness.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 9, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Clifford Parker officiating.

A native of Jackson County, where she lived most of her life, she retired from Buster Brown as a quality control inspector.

She was a daughter of the late Sherman and Sallie Coward and was also preceded in death by a sister.

Surviving are her son Charles Blackburn of Sylva and one grandson.



Ruth White

Ruth Pannell White, 87, of Gastonia, died Thursday, June 29, 2006, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

Services were in the West Chapel of Greene Funeral Service at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 1, with the Revs. David Scruggs and Lamar Creel officiating. Burial was in the Old Field Cemetery on Sunday, July 2.

She was born in Jackson County on Feb. 7, 1919. She was a charter member of First Assembly of God in Gastonia. She was the daughter of the late John and Rebecca Monteith Pannell.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Henry White; seven brothers, Garney, Fred, Roscoe, Burl, Craig, Jearld Lee, and Vernon Pannell; and one sister, Nina Mae.

Surviving are three sons, James White of Kings Mountain, Michael White of Asheville and Dennis White of Lowell; one sister, Reginia Fisher of Sylva; eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Grover Fisher

Grover Lee Fisher, 84, of Blanton Branch Road, Sylva, died Saturday, July 8, 2006, at Skyland Care Center after a brief illness.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 11, at Ochre Hill Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Revs. Johnny Norris, Earl Holden and Eddie Stillwell officiating. Burial was in Love Cemetery, with military rites being conducted by the William E. Dillard American Legion Post 104.

Pallbearers were Richard Fisher, David Fisher, Scott Fisher, Crit Fisher, Bryan Fisher and Chris Sellers. Doyle Shuler, James Hall and Dale Pittman, were honorary pallbearers.

A native of Jackson County, where he lived most of his life, he retired from Mead Corporation with 28 years of service as a train engineer. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran, serving in World War II.

He was a farmer and a member of Dillsboro Masonic Lodge and a son of the late Jim and Eliza Cagle Fisher.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Avainell Harsley Fisher, who died in 1987; a son, James Crit Fisher; two brothers, Jim and Leighton Fisher; and a sister, Edna Pittman.

Surviving are three sons, Larry Lee Fisher, Richard Fisher and Dwight Fisher, all of Sylva; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, one step-granddaughter and one step-great-grandson.

Melton-Riddle was in charge of arrangements.



James Ridgeway

James W. Ridgeway, 85, of Whittier, died Saturday, July 8, 2006.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 14, at Sylva First Baptist Church. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Committal will be in Thomas Memorial Cemetery.

Moody Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.



Mary Brown

Mary Frances Queen Brown, 72, of Franklin, Tenn., died Friday, July 7, 2006, at her home, after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 9, with the Revs. Rusty Trotter and Cal Cooper officiating. Burial was in Williamson Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Ken Faust, Julian Moore, Ron Price, Bob Sistrunk, Don Shotwell, and George Thompson.

A native of Sylva, she graduated from Sylva High School in 1954. She lived in Franklin for the past 40 years. She was a charter member of Grassland Heights Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for pre-school children. She was a daughter of the late A.B. Sr. and Sadie Coward Queen.

She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Gracia Garrison and Elywn Deitz; and two brothers, Clyde and Andrew Queen, Jr.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Edwin D. Brown; one daughter Carolyn Bagsby; one son Phillip Brown; four grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Barnes of Elkin, W.Va.; and one step-sister, Dorothy Allman of Webster.

Memorials may be made to Grassland Heights Baptist Church or Willowbrook Hospice.

Betty Barnes

Betty Joe Fisher Barnes, 65, of Fisher Creek Road, Sylva, died Sunday, July 9, 2006, after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 11, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Farmer officiating. Burial was in Dills Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a member of Scotts Creek Baptist Church. She retired from Haywood County Schools after 34 years, where she was the director of Special Needs program. She was a member of the board of directors of Webster Enterprises Inc., of Jackson County. She was a graduate of Western Carolina University where she obtained masters and specialists degrees in special education and administration. She was the daughter of Joe Clyde Fisher of Sylva and the late Lucy Parker Fisher.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, William D. “Danny” Barnes.

Surviving in addition to her father are, one son, Todd Barnes of Sylva; one daughter, Angie Noland of Sylva; one sister, Mary Fisher Mason of Dracula, Ga.; and two grandsons.

Memorials may be made to Ensley Adult Care Activity Fund, 515 Racking Cove Rd., Sylva, N.C. 28779, or to N.C. Special Olympics.



Dorothy McMillin

Dorothy Hungerford McMillin, 76, of Twin Bridges, Mont. died Friday, June 30, 2006.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 5, at K&L Mortuary Chapel in Twin Bridges. Burial followed the ceremony.

She was a seamstress, cook, and champion bowler. She enjoyed making crafts, fishing, hunting grouse, picnicking, rock hunting, and exploring old mines.

She worked in various businesses in the Twin Bridges area where she met a number of Jackson County residents. She was the daughter of the late Olive and George Hungerford.

She was also preceded in death by her infant son, Ervin Eugene; and a sister, Phyllis.

She is survived by her husband, Bill McMillin; two daughters, Janie and Judy; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Vivian.

Memorials may be made to Twin Bridges Library, Ruby Valley EMTs, or the Twin Bridges Cemetery Association.



Dennis Teesateskie

Dennis Lloyd “Skin” Teesateskie, 33, of Big Cove Community, Cherokee, died Saturday, July 1, 2006, at Mission Hospitals in Asheville.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 8, at Big Cove Baptist Church with the Revs. Bo Parris and Phillip Ellenton officiating. Burial was in Driver Cemetery.

A native of Swain County, he was employed by Harrah’s with the stage crew. He was the son of the late Lloyd Sr. and Joyce Driver Teesateskie.

Surviving are two daughters, Kira and Ashley Teesateskie, both of Cherokee; a son Hayden Neadeau of Camarillo, Calif; three brothers Lloyd Teesateskie, Jr. of Robbinsville, and Randy and Danny Driver, both of Cherokee.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
