DICK SELLERS of Sylva has retired after 36 years with the U.S.D.A. Farm Service Agency. A fish fry to celebrate the occasion is planned for Friday, July 14, at the Deep Creek Pavilion in Bryson City. The event will begin with a social hour from 5 to 6 p.m. and will be followed by a fish fry from 6 to 8 p.m. Cost is $10 per person, which includes meal, drink, dessert and tip. Those who plan to attend are asked to R.S.V.P. by noon Monday, July 10.
SYLVA-WEBSTER’S Class of 1976 will hold its 30-year reunion at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at The Station restaurant on Everett Street in Bryson City. Cost is $25, which includes appetizers, salad, dinner and desert. A pay-as-you-go bar will also be available. In addition to those who graduated, anyone who was a member of the class at any time during high school is invited along with their spouses, guests and former teachers. CATMAN2 cat rescue shelter in Cullowhee is planning a “Christmas in July fund-raiser on Saturday, July 29, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Community Service Center in Sylva. Included will be a hot dog supper, flea market, silent auction, live auction and raffle of a hand-made quilt. The quilt is on display at Livington’s Photo in Sylva, where tickets are on sale for $1 each or 6 for $5. Tickets can also be purchased from other local merchants, the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and the Catman2 shelter and will be available at the event. Quilt tickets can also be purchased during a first-time visit to the Catman2 shelter when they will be two for $1 or 12 for $5 (limit of 12). Call the shelter (293-0892) for an appointment between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to take advantage of this offer. Donations of flea market items (no clothing) and items for the sale and auctioin are needed. JULIE CAGLE NAEGLER of Cullowhee (below) is holding some 8 inches of her hair that was cut at the Southwestern Community College Cosmetology Department and donated to “Locks of Love” to be used in wigs for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Naegler attends SCC and will begin the school’s registered nurse program in August. She is the daughter of Dollie and Harry Bumgarner of Cullowhee and granddaughter of Annivee Peek of Franklin.
MATTHEW PHILLIPS, grandson of Ray and Joanne Bradley of Sylva, has been named an All-American Scholar by the U.S. Achievement Academy. Phillips, son of Marty and Amanda Phillips of Burnsville, attends Cane River Middle School. He is also the grandson of Guy and Genevie Phillips of Burnsville.
ANNETTA STREATER of Chapel Hill, wife of 1982 Sylva-Webster graduate and athletic standout Eric Streater, has been appointed to the Chapel Hill-Carrboro school board. She was appointed last month to fill a vacancy created when an elected school board member moved away from the area. A native of Goldsboro, Annetta Streater holds two degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and works as a dental hygienist. The school board is her first foray into politics.
WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA WOOD-TURNERS will meet at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 11, in the Cashiers Village Green pavilion by the “playground. The general business of the club will be the approval of the proposed change of by-laws and the installation of new officers. The demonstration will be making a drum sander for a wood lathe. AN OPENING RECEPTION FOR SYLVA HERALD PHOTOGRAPHER NICK BREEDLOVE’S first studio exhibit attracted the largest crowd ever at It’s By Nature gallery on Main Street Friday (June 30). Titled “Exploring Jackson County,” Breedlove’s work includes images of local landscapes and waterfalls taken in conjunction with The Herald’s summer magazine, “Across the Mountains,” which was published with last week’s newspaper. Breedlove’s photos will remain on display at the gallery throughout July, and copies of “Across the Mountains” are now available in free distribution boxes around Sylva and Dillsboro.
