The old F&P Supermarket building was still standing beside N.C. 107 across from Cody’s in this photo from the 1980s (top), though the grocery store had by then been replaced by The Bargain Place and Queen’s Discount Shoes. The structure was torn down some five years ago to make room for Macon Bank and its parking lot (lower photo), according to Padgett McCoy, who started the F&P in 1957 with his brother Furman. Furman McCoy pulled out after a year, said Padgett McCoy, who continued to operate the store, which was known for its quality meats, through 1977. Ray Bennett bought the business from Padgett McCoy and continued to operate a grocery store under the F&P name for another five or six years, Padgett McCoy said. Cody’s is visible on the left in both photos, though the building in the top photo was torn down in 1998 to make way for the present station. The building that used to be Clark’s Auto Parts and is now Smokey Mountain Video, can be seen on the right side of the road in both pictures as well. – Photo courtesy of Lana Phillips (top) and Herald photo by Nick Breedlove.
