Charles Woodring
Charles Lee Woodring, infant son of Charles Woodring, Sr., and Teresa Cheek, died Sunday, June 25, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital.
Graveside services were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, June 29, at Woodring Cemetery, with the Rev. Johnny Norris officiating.
He is survived, in addition to his parents, by three sisters, Brianna Woodring, Charley Woodring, and Natalie Woodring; and a half sister, Frances Cheek.

Jesse Littlejohn
Jesse Littlejohn, 78, of Cherokee, died Tuesday, June 27, 2006, at his residence.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 30, at Cherokee Church of God, of which he was a member, with the Revs. Johnny Cox and A.J. Skeleton officiating. Burial was in Cherokee Church of God cemetery.
He lived in Wolfetown community his entire life where he served as a council member on the Tribal Council for three terms, from 1966 to 1973. He was mainly self-employed but retired as a logger and the owner of Littlejohn Campground. He was a son of the late Henson Littlejohn Sr. and Lewee Long Littlejohn.
He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Jessie Ann Littlejohn, three brothers, three sisters and one grandson.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Alice Toineeta Littlejohn; a brother, Tom Littlejohn of Cherokee; a sister, Sally Littlejohn Reed of Cherokee; two sons, Jeremiah “Hank” Littlejohn and Leroy Littlejohn, both of Cherokee; a daughter, Shirley Littlejohn Crowe, also of Cherokee; 14 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

Carolyn Lathan
Carolyn Norman Lathan, 56, of Bunny Cove, Sylva, died Thursday, June 29, 2006, after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 1, at Trinity Baptist Church, with the Revs. Randy Ammons and Mike Cogdill officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Jeff Crawford, Lawrence and James Davis, Donnie Gass, Harold Henry and Carl Stepp.
She was born in Jackson County, where she lived most of her life. She was most recently employed by Care Partners at Thoms Rehab Hospital for the past nine years. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, where she helped with Vacation Bible School, sang in the choir and was the church clerk.
The daughter of Clyde Jarvis Norman of Sylva and the late Georgia Parris Norman, she was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Anderson.
Surviving, in addition to her father, are her daughter, Cynthia Dillard Cogdill of Franklin; two sisters, Sandy Norman and Clydie Buchanan, both of Sylva; and two granddaughters.

Wanda Ward
Wanda Jean Ward, 59, of Sylva, died Thursday, June 29, 2006.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 2, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
She was the daughter of the late Eulan C. Ward and Bertie Mae Franklin Ward.
Surviving are one son, Johnnie Ward of Murphy; one sister, Kay Ann Ward Tolley of Sylva; and one brother, Wayne Ward of Sylva.

Mildred Nicholson
Mildred A. Nicholson, 84, of Glenville, died Friday, June 30, 2006.
Services were held at noon Monday, July 3, at Hamburg Baptist Church with the Rev. Lester Sutton officiating. Burial was in Hamburg Cemetery.
She retired as postmaster from the Glenville Post Office. She was the daughter of the late Samuel R. Fisher and Edith Pruett.

Fairie Hensley
Fairie Lee Nations Hensley, 69, of Macktown Road, Dillsboro, died Tuesday, June 27, 2006, at Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 29, at Locust Field Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Revs. Charles Carnes and Larry Nations officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
She was a native of Jackson County, where she lived most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Thurman and Beulah Davis Nations.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Geraldine Carpenter; and a brother, Arvil Nations.
Surviving are her husband of 49 years, Edward Hensley; and a son, Curtis Hensley of Sylva.

Jack Battle
Jack Charles Battle, 81, of formerly of Clyde, died Sunday, May 27, 2006.
Interment of ashes will be in Valleytown Cemetery in Andrews.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was an aviation electrician’s mate, stationed at San Diego, and Alameda, Calif. He served two years during World War II in the Pacific, including Espiritu Santu and New Hebrides. He served stateside at Quonset Point, R.I., until his discharge in Dec. 1945.
He attended the University of Houston for three years, then South Texas College of Law, Houston, Texas and graduated in 1953. He was employed at Champion Paper as an electrician. He went back to the University of Houston in 1961 and received a bachelor’s in political science with a teaching certificate.
He studied the lives of classical music composers and history, especially family history. He was a direct descendant of John Sevier. He spent years in research before writing “We Begin With Matthew,” the Second Battle Book. He is a son of the late E. Gilbert and Neva Sprinkle Battle.
He was also preceded in death by brothers Noel Kent, George Dale, and Stanley Devoe.
Surviving are his wife, Ivah Grace; two sons, Jack Battle, Jr., and Mark Steven Battle; four daughters, Catherine Pierce, Judith Romo, Reba Sardari, and Phyllis Salinas; 10 grandchilden; five great-grandsons; and five brothers, Francis Gilbert, Carl William, Philip Davis, Lynn Joaquin, and Reuben Brian.
