Herald advertising staff picks up five statewide awards

By Lynn Hotaling

The Sylva Herald’s advertising staff captured a total of five awards recently in the N.C. Press Association’s Best Ad contest. Awards were presented June 15 in Research Triangle Park.

Advertising Manager Margo Gray won three individual awards – two firsts and a second. Advertising staffer Sherry Peek brought home a second place, and Kelly Timco, who left The Herald in April, won a first-place award for an ad he designed for his current employer.

Gray placed first in the Best Use of Spot Color category for an advertisement she designed for Heinzelmannchen Brewery. Her other firstplace award came in the Best Advertising Campaign category for a series of ads she created for the Jackson County Humane Society (ARF). Her second-place win was for Best Full Color Retail Ad and was awarded to an ad she designed for Ray’s Florist.

Gray’s first-place win for the humane society was especially satisfying, she said, because it helped a community group share information about the plight of unwanted animals.

Based on comments printed in the Press Association’s award publication, the contest judge agreed.

“Very effective ad campaign to illustrate a potential community problem of unwanted animals,” he wrote. “(Gray had) a good idea that was well done.”

Timco, who now works for Jim Brown Chrysler in Franklin, earned his first-place nod in the Best Motor Vehicle Ad category for an ad he designed for Western Carolina Chrysler Plymouth, the former Sylva dealership also owned by Brown. Peek’s second-place win in the Best Spot Color Retail Ad division is for an ad she created for J&H Pump Service.

Herald Publisher Steve Gray said he is pleased by the advertising department’s strong showing in the statewide competition.

“These awards say a lot about the caliber of ad support our newspaper is able to offer its retail customers,” he said.

“I think our local businesses really benefit from the expertise of our award-winning advertising staff,” the publisher said. “I’m really proud of the good job they do every week and happy they’ve received this recognition.”
