Fourth of July
Crowds packed downtown Sylva Tuesday in preparation for another spectacular fireworks display over Jackson County’s historic Courthouse, but a severe storm moved into the area ahead of this year’s show. Thunder, lightning and heavy rain washed out the planned pyrotechnics, marking the first time the annual July 4 event has been cancelled in more than a decade. Until the rain started at around 8:15 p.m., thousands of people enjoyed food, music and contests downtown in anticipation of the big event.
