Peggy Epling
Peggy Gunter Epling, 52, of Pond View Drive, Sylva, died Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 23, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. Tommy Ashe, Michael Gunter and Steve Gunter officiating. Burial was in Gunter Cemetery.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was an office manager at A1 Precision Lock and Safe. She was a daughter of Romola Wykle Gunter of Whittier and the late Gardner Gunter.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, Ray Gunter; and one sister, Patsy Gunter.
Surviving are her husband of nine years, Gary Epling; one son, Matt Orr of Whittier; one stepson, J.R. Epling of Sylva; five sisters, Jean Brown, Linda Gunter and Judy Aikens, all of Whittier, Darlene Burch of Dillsboro, and Anne Hoyle of Bryson City; two brothers, James Gunter of Whittier and Marvin Gunter of Dillsboro; and two grandchildren.

George Stewart
George Bernice Stewart, 82, of Evans, Ga., died Monday, June 26, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
Services will be held in Georgia at a later date. Elliott Sons Funeral Home of Martinez, Ga., will be in charge of arrangements.
He spent his summers in Jackson County.

Cecil Mathis
Cecil Timber Mathis, 57, of Wayehutta Road, Cullowhee, died Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Oteen after a period of declining health.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 22, in Old Field Cemtery with the Rev. Ray Fox officiating. Military rites were conducted by the U.S. Army and William E. Dillard American Legion Post 104.
Pallbearers were James Shuler, Mike Shuler, Dallas Davis, Justin Woodard, Mitchell Burns and John Driver.
He was a native of Jackson County, where he lived most of his life. He resurfaced floors at Western Carolina University and was a member of Laurel Branch Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Vietnam War. He was a son of Margaret Mathis Connor of Sylva and the late Peter Alexander Mathis.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife of 34 years, Brenda Welch Mathis; one daugher, Amanda Mathis Byrd of Franklin; three sons, Tim Mathis of Sylva, Christopher Mathis of Whittier and Greg Mathis of Dillsboro; one sister, Minnie Haney of Sylva; one brother, Kenny Mathis of Sylva; and five grandchildren.

Jack Walker
Jack Donald Walker, 80, of Cherokee, died unexpectedly Saturday, June 25, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 27, at Acquoni Baptist Church with Ray Kinsland, and Elders Lee Jenks and John Parker officiating. Burial was in Yellow Hill Veterans Cemetery with military rites conducted by Steve Youngdeer Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 143.
Pallbearers were Isaac Long III, Steve Henson, Robert Taylor, Jimmy Arch, Charlie Arch and Steve Ross.
A native and lifelong resident of Swain County, he was a machinist for Universal Screw. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and enjoyed playing bingo and fishing. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. He was a son of the late Willie and Amanda Catt Walker.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Kahdot Webster, who died in 2002; one son, Walter Jack Walker; and one sister, Edna Minnie Long.
Surviving are four daughters, Selene Hope Pheasant, Mary Long, Jackie McCoy and Debbie Taylor, all of Cherokee; one son, Frank William Walker of Cherokee; six sisters, Lucille Radford of Mooresville, her twin, Inez Seay of Cherokee, Pauline Markley of Kansas City, Mo., Jessie Howard of Bryson City, Maxine Lambert of Smyrna, Ga., and Alene Dixon of Bryson City; two brothers, George Walker of Bryson City and Eugene Walker of Phoenix, Ariz.; 15 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Lily Wolfe
Lily Ann Sampson Wolfe, 73, of Cherokee’s Big Witch community, died Monday, June 26, 2006, at her residence after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 28, at Acqouni Baptist Church with Ray Kinsland, and the Revs. Ed Kilgore and James Bo Parris officiating. Burial was in Crowe Family Cemetery.
Pallbearers were her children and grandchildren.
A native of Swain County, she had lived most of her life in Jackson County. She enjoyed cooking and watching Atlanta Braves games. She was a member of Wrights Creek Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Arch and Leanna Crowe Sampson.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Van Emory Wolfe, who died in 1997; one daughter, Laura Lee Jumper; three sons, Gilbert, James David and Talmadge Lee Jumper; two sisters, Elsie Martin and Mickey Garner; and three grandchildren.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Jumper Evans and Nancy Jumper Poncho, both of Cherokee; three sons, Charles “Hoss” Jumper and Robert Ellis Swayney, both of Cherokee, and Ben Allen Swayney of Sylva; four sisters, Mary Sampson Catt, Joann Kalonaheskie, Lawanda Maney and Gwendolyn Wildcatt, all of Cherokee; one brother, Leon “Duffy” Sampson of Cherokee; 13 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Margaret Frizzell
Margaret Ensley Frizzell, 81, of Sylva’s Little Savannah community, died Saturday, June 24, 2006, at Mission Hospitals in Asheville.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 27, at Little Savannah Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. Kent Lowdermilk, Ray McCall and Mike Farmer officiating. Burial was in Carl Frizzell Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Russell Ensley, Doug Jones, Carl Frizzell, Ricky Crawford, Randy Crawford, Ryan Jones, Billy Crain and David King.
Honorary pallbearers were Larry Crawford, Kaleb Frizzell, Jason Frizzell and Chandler Hensley.
She was born in Beta community on April 24, 1925. She retired from Ensley’s Adult Care Center in 1989 and was a homemaker. She was a daughter of the late Berry and Emma Dean Ensley.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Carl Kellie Frizzell; three brothers, Burger, Alvin and Louis Ensley; and by one sister who died in infancy.
Surviving are three sons, David Frizzell, Rick Frizzell and Kenny Frizzell, all of Sylva; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Charles Lee Woodring Jr., infant son of Charles Woodring Sr. and Teresa Check of Sylva, died Sunday, June 25, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Madge Merrell
Madge D. Merrell, 99, of Crooked House Road, Cashiers, died on her birthday, Sunday, June 25, 2006.
Services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 28, at Cashiers United Methodist Church, of which she was a member for 89 years.
Pallbearers were Benny Rice, Delbert McCall, Todd Dillard, Ed Prime, Dean Madden and Mike White.
She finished high school at Western Carolina University and attended college there for one and a half years. She taught school in Jackson County for 45 years and was the oldest registered voter in the county.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Merritt; and two sons, Dink and Curtis.
Surviving are four brothers; two sisters; seven grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

John Horn
John Wesley Horn, 82, of Gaffney, S.C., died Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 24, in the chapel of Blakely Funeral Home with the Revs. Jason Patterson and Rodney Cook officiating. Burial was in Frederick Memorial Gardens.
He was born in Lockhart, S.C., and was retired from Standard Coffee Company. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II, and a member of West End Baptist Church. He was a son of the late Druey B. Horn and Adrell Hoyle Horn.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Stella Bostic Horn.
Surviving are one son, Tom Horn of Fort Mill, S.C.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Florence Hoxit
Florence Galloway Hoxit, 85, of Charleys Creek Road, Tuckasegee, died Saturday, June 24, 2006, at her residence after an extended illness.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 26, at Charleys Creek Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. Leonard Luker, John Bates and L.H. Mathis officiating. Burial was in Charleys Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Darrell Luker, Roger Luker, Dennis Luker, David Luker, Jamie Luker and Chris Ashe.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she enjoyed quilting and gardening. She was a daughter of the late Wed and Mary Harris Galloway.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Lee Hoxit, who died in 1970; two daughters, Edith Moon and Anna Faye Luker; five brothers; three sisters; and two grandsons.
Surviving are six daughters, Dorothy Snyder, Leola Durham and Lilly Tucker, all of Pickens, S.C., Leona Luker, Gladys Luker and Brenda Hoxit, all of Tuckasegee; one stepdaughter, Alma McCall of Pisgah Forest; two sons, Berlen Hoxit of Tuckasegee and Berles Hoxit of Pickens; one stepson, Leward Hoxit of Tuckasegee; two sisters, Bessie Airline of Jacksonville, Fla., and Betty Dean Turbyfille of Asheville; one brother, Earl Galloway of Castlerock, Wash.; 25 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Daniel Bryson
Daniel Joe Ervin Bryson Sr., 72, of Sylva, died Sunday, June 25, 2006.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 28, at Liberty Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Lee officiating. Burial was in Parris Cemetery.
He enjoyed woodworking and telling jokes. He was a Mason, and a deacon and lifelong member of Liberty Baptist Church. He was a son of the late Ode Fred Bryson and Hattie Howell Bryson.
He was also preceded in death by one son, Daniel Bryson Jr.; five brothers; and three sisters.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Elizabeth “Nancy” Bryson; two sons, Ronnie Worley Bryson and Gary Bryson; three daughters, Kimberly Bryson, Patricia Armstrong and Glenda Jean Bryson Jacobs; and 12 grandchildren.

Ruby Williams, 89, of Sylva, died unexpectedly Thursday, June 22, 2006.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 25, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Carnes officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were her nephews.
She enjoyed gardening and canning. She was a member of Locust Field Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher for more than 40 years. She was a daughter of the late Johnie Davis and Mary P. Jones Davis.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Walter W. Williams; one daughter, Mary Louise Williams; two sons, Harold Williams and Charles Williams; five sisters, Mazie Arrowood, Annie Sue Worley, Molly Mills, Selma Davis and Nellie Miller; and three brothers, Grover, Corsey and Grady Davis.
Surviving are two sons, Robert Lee Williams and Walter Williams Jr., both of Sylva; one daughter, Barbara James of Canton; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Helen Bass
Helen Cason Bass of Cullowhee died Monday, June 19, 2005, at Highlands Eckerd Nursing Facility.
Services will be held at a later date.
She was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd and Daughter of the King service organization. She was raised in Miami, Fla., and attended Miami High School and the University of Miami.
Surviving are her husband of 57 years, Shelby Dana Bass; three sons, James Bass of Hamilton, Mont., Paul Bass of Melbourne, Fla., and Andy Bass of Sarasota, Fla.; two daughters, Suzanne Bass of Houston, Texas, and Patricia Bass of Golden, Colo.; and six grandchildren.

Priscilla Watson “Pat” Ashe, 81, of Bear Creek Road, Tuckasegee, died unexpectedly Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at her residence.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 24, at Cedar Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. Jim Ed Powell, Carl Adams and Sherrill Ammons officiating. Burial was in Middleton Cemetery.
Pallbearers were her nephews.
She was born in South Carolina but had lived most of her life in Jackson County. She retired from Western Carolina University’s housekeeping department, and enjoyed reading, knitting and crocheting.
She was a daughter of the late Garland F. and Mary Etta Golden Watson.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ferry Ashe, who died in 1963; two infant sons; three brothers, Dee, Roy and Charlie Watson; and one sister, Lucy Middleton.
Surviving is one sister, Mae Middleton of Tuckasegee.
