Mitchell takes 12th at nationals

Running in what proved to be the toughest of the three heats on Friday afternoon, Western Carolina freshman sprinter Manteo Mitchell placed 12th at the 2006 United States Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships held in Indianapolis, Ind., missing the finals by four positions.

The Mooresboro native posted a time of 48 seconds flat to finish fifth out of seven runners in the first of three preliminary heats. The winner of each qualifying heat plus the next five quickest times overall advanced to Saturday afternoon’s final, all earning Junior All-American status. Four of the eight finalists came from Mitchell’s flight with the top three times all turned in by competitors his heat.

Mitchell was the eighth Catamount to compete at the Junior Nationals since 1999, with three individuals earning Junior All-American honors during that same span.
