THE SYLVA HERALD’S GREAT SMOKIES DINING GUIDE and annual contest will begin next week. Look for the entry blank and enter – you might win a gift certificate to an area restaurant.

FANS OF THIS NEWSPAPER’S “THEN AND NOW” feature may be interested to learn that this week’s subject – the old Allison’s (later Sears) building on Main Street – will be the site of the first studio exhibit of photographs by Herald photographer Nick Breedlove. Downtown gallery It’s By Nature now occupies the building at the west end of town, and owner Sandi Cooper will host an artist’s reception Friday, June 30, from 7 to 9 p.m. Breedlove’s photos, which include images he captured for the newspaper’s upcoming “Across the Mountains” magazine special section, will remain on display at It’s By Nature through July.

GINGER ROBERSON is The Sylva Herald’s new advertising representative. She holds a degree in graphic design from Southwestern Community College and brings six years of newspaper experience to help area businesses with their advertising needs. Roberson lives in Bryson City with her daughter, Emily, a fifth-grader at Swain County’s East Elementary School. Her parents, Robey and Betty Bridges, also live in Bryson City.

IN A HAPPY COINCIDENCE, the wild hydrangeas (Hydrangea arborescens) Cullowhee’s Kay Byer writes about in this week’s first column (see page 1C), are just starting to flower. Byer, North Carolina’s poet laureate, will write a monthly newspaper column.

A CITY LIGHTS Saturday event announced in this week’s Community Life section has been cancelled. Author Julia Duncan has had a death in her family, and the event will be rescheduled, according to City Lights’ Jenifer Ross.

REG MOODY JR. of Moody Funeral Home has qualified for recertification of the designation of Certified Funeral Service Practitioner by the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice. Moody is a lifetime member of the academy and received his initial certification in 2001. Moody, who is in his sixth year as a CFSP, says he is the only funeral director west of Canton with the certification.

ATTENTION RECORD COLLECTORS: The Friends of the Library Book Store has received a large record collection. Records are priced reasonably, and there are hundreds of choices. In addition, parents can find a large selection of well-priced books for their children this summer at the book store. Don’t forget the summer reading programs sponsored by both Jackson County Public Library and Friends of the Library when your child says there is “nothing to do.”
