Allison’s car dealership was still located on Main Street in the former Sears Building (It’s By Nature gallery is there now) when the top photo was snapped in 1959 for an Allison’s advertisement. Published in The Sylva Herald’s May 21, 1959, issue, the ad told of the dealer’s “redecorated” display lot and “protractive” cover that protected its new cars rain or shine. Dan Allison’s automotive and appliance business was initially located in The Sylva Herald building at the east end of town and moved to the other end of Main Street in the late 1940s. New cars on display in the spring of 1959 included an Oldsmobile, Jeep, Studebaker and Rambler. Allison’s, now a Chevrolet dealer, moved to its current location between Sylva and Dillsboro in the late 1960s or early 1970s after construction of the Grindstaff Road access for the Sylva Bypass, which opened in 1974, claimed the dealer’s Railroad Avenue repair shop. Sears moved into the Main Street building during the early 1970s and remained for more than two decades. Several short-lived businesses occupied the space before It’s By Nature owner Sandi Cooper opened her gallery (lower photo) in 2003. – Herald file photo (top) and Herald photo by Nick Breedlove. |
