Melba Dillard
Melba Monteith Dillard, 83, of N.C. 107 South, Cashiers, died Wednesday, June 14, 2006, at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital after an extended illness.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 17, at Cashiers United Methodist Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. David Beam and Amy Spivey officiating. Burial was in Upper Zachery Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Scott Dillard, Rex Dillard, Rick Monteith, Phil Monteith, Randy Dillard and Nathan Bumgarner.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the Cashiers-Glenville Fire Department.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she had worked as a dining room supervisor at High Hampton Inn. She had also worked at Cashiers Valley Pharmacy. She was a daughter of the late T.C. and Elise Wilson Monteith.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Norton Dillard, who died in 1993; three sisters, Ada Hooper, Lucille DeVern and Thelma Smith; and one grandson.
Surviving are three sons, Gary Dillard of Mooresville, and Todd Dillard and Steve Dillard, both of Cashiers; one brother, Richard Monteith of Cashiers; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Cecil Timber Mathis, 57, of Cullowhee, died Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Oteen.

Mary Wade
Mary Ann Wade, 62, of Cherokee’s Birdtown community, died Friday, June 16, 2006, at Cherokee Indian Hospital.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 18, at Rock Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Bo Parris officiating. Burial was in Wade Family Cemetery.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee. She was a member of Qualla Arts and Crafts Cooperative and was a basket maker. She was a daughter of the late Lee and Sally Ann Taylor.
Surviving are three sisters, Alice Wade, Vera Wade and Susan Welch, all of Cherokee; and one brother, Nathaniel Wade of Cherokee.

Hillard Nicholson
Hillard Robert “Hill” Nicholson, 91, of Sedro-Woolley, Wash., died Wednesday, June 14, 2006, at his home.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 19, at Lemley Chapel in Sedro-Woolley with Pastor Wylie Gibson and Pastor Ron Edwards officiating. Burial was in Burlington Cemetery.
He was born in Cullowhee Oct. 31, 1914. He was raised and attended school in North Carolina, moving to Washington in the late 1930s. He worked as a tree faller in the timber industry working for several logging companies around Skagit County, Wash. Upon his retirement, he began building clocks, crafting more than 50. He was formerly a member of Ochre Hill Baptist Church and was a member of Hamilton (Wash.) First Baptist Church for several years. He enjoyed growing vegetables, hunting and fishing. He was a son of the late Lawrence and Lizzie Wiggins Nicholson.
He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Fred, Oscar, Frank and his twin, Dillard Nicholson; and one sister, Liz Jackson.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Gertrude; one daughter, Peggy Allen of Sedro-Woolley; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Bill Shuler
Everett Lee “Bill” Shuler, 91, of Sylva, died Saturday, June 17, 2006, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 19, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Stevens officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Dennis Ensley, Bobby Moss, Gene McConnell, Jim Turpin, Gene Gregory and Freddy Beasley.
A native of Macon County, he had lived most of his life in Jackson County. He was a retired self-employed painter and a member of East Sylva Baptist Church. He was a son of the late Samuel David Shuler and Nanny Guffey.
He was also preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Mildred Robinson Shuler; and seven siblings.
Surviving are one daughter, Olivia Holloman of Chesterfield, Va.; two sons, Wayne Shuler of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Jerry Shuler of Rock Hill, S.C.; one sister, Inez Minter of South Hill, Va.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Luther Broom
Luther V. Broom, 81, of Hamilton, Wash., died Monday, June 12, 2006, at Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon, Wash.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 15, at Lemley Chapel in Sedro-Woolley, Wash., with Pastor Ron Edwards officiating. Burial was in Hamilton Cemetery with military honors conducted by George Baldridge American Legion Post 43.
He was born in Canada community on June 4, 1925. A U.S. Army veteran, he earned two Purple Hearts and five Bronze Stars serving in the 19th Infantry in World War II. He moved to Washington in 1960, and retired from Scott Paper in 1987. He enjoyed gardening. He was a son of the late Ralph and Nan Brown Broom.
He was also preceded in death by three brothers.
Surviving are his wife, Annie; one son, Mike Broom of Washington; two brothers, Dwight Broom of North Carolina and Freeman Broom of Washington; two sisters, Opal Keener and Dorothy Yake, both of North Carolina; and two grandsons.

Homer Stewart
Homer C. Stewart, 64, of Marlett Road in Glenville’s Pine Creek community, died unexpectedly Monday, June 19, 2006.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, June 22) at Pine Creek Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Revs. Johnny Norris, Wesley Hooper and Everette Wilson officiating. The family was scheduled to receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pine Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Stephen Jennings, Ronnie Setzer, Keith Ashe, Jerry Guffie, Morlan Bowman and Greg Crisp.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he enjoyed farming, being outdoors and deer hunting. He was a self-employed painter. He was a son of the late Eva Stewart Frady.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Lyle Junior Coggins.
Surviving are his wife of 16 years, Jeanette Roberts Stewart; two daughters, Phyllis Guffie of Franklin and Linda Stewart of Bryson City; one stepdaughter, Deborah Sanders of Cullowhee; five stepsons, Daryl Logan of Arizona, David Logan of Cashiers, John Logan of Sylva, and James Logan and Thomas Logan, both of Cullowhee; two sisters, Willa Mae Moses of Franklin and Mamie L. Peeler of Cullowhee; three brothers, Jerry Frady of Franklin, and Jimmy Frady and Johnny Frady, both of Cullowhee; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

George Bradley
George Bradley, 20, of Cherokee, died Saturday, June 17, 2006, at Tsali Care Center after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 19, at Rock Spring Baptist Church with the Revs. Bo Parris and Dan Lambert officiating. Burial was in Bradley Family Cemetery.
Pallbearers were members of his family.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Rowena Bradley.
Surviving are his mother, Mary Bradley of Cherokee; and two sisters, Savetta Williams and Reva Bradley, both of Cherokee.

Beulah Broom
Beulah Shelton Broom, 85, of Frosty Ridge Road, Sylva, died Sunday, June 18, 2006, at Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Earl Holden and Johnny Norris officiating. Burial was in Broom Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Darwin Ferguson, Sam Wade, Eddie Earwood, Junior Keefer, Eric Messer and Tyson Bodford.
A native of Jackson County, where she had lived most of her life, she enjoyed gardening. She had worked as an inspector at Skyland Textile. She was a daughter of the late Ransom and Viva Owens Shelton.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Frank Dewey Broom, who died in 2005; one son, Bill Broom; two daughters, Shirley Shuler and Elaine Courtwright; three brothers, Buster, Olis and Volley Shelton; two sisters, Susie Galloway and Etta Shelton; two grandsons; one great-granddaughter; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Surviving are one daughter, Helen Parker of Sylva; one son, Phillip Broom of Sylva; two sisters, Viola Dillard of Canton and Anna Lee Galloway of Brevard; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Lois Farthing
Lois Queen Farthing, 83, of Tsali Boulevard, Cherokee, died Sunday, June 18, 2006, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, at Cherokee Methodist Church, of which she was a member, with the Rev. Steve Phillippi officiating. Burial was in Drama Cemetery.
A native and lifelong resident of Swain County, she was a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. She was a lifetime business owner, having owned Newfound Lodge and several other hotels, restaurants and gift shops. The U.S. Department of Commerce awarded her the Native American Business Award, which was presented by then-President George Herbert Walker Bush. She enjoyed gardening and reading. She was a former trustee and member of the Cherokee Historical Association, a founding member of Friends of Sequoyah, a member of the Blue Ridge Parkway Association, a former board member of the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce, and a former board member of Northwestern Bank. She was a daughter of the late Lelia Cooper Queen and James Candler Queen. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Reva Reneau.
Surviving are one daughter, Lyna Ferguson of Whittier; two granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren.
